Microsoft’s Migration Strategy for SBS • Side by side migration process within 21 days • Goal: Minimal downtime for end-users • Caveat: Server name changes during migration • Supported paths • SBS 2011 Standard: SBS 2003, SBS 2008, SBS 2011 Std. • SBS 2011 Essentials: SBS 2003, SBS 2011 Ess. • Same process applies for Windows Server Standard • No 21 day limit since source is not SBS

4. Migration has 4 distinct phases • Phase 1: Prepare the Source Server • Phase 2: Install the Destination Server in “Migration Mode” • Phase 3: Migrate settings and data • Phase 4: Demote and remove the Source Server Move Data Source Dest. Side by Side Join Domain

5. Hyper –V Support on SBS • Can be deployed as both Physical or Virtual • SBS server cannot be the Hyper V host • Use 2nd Server with Premium Add-On as the Hyper-V host

Virtualization Methods • Consolidate all servers on single HW • Useful when you have several member servers • Easier to manage; reduces energy costs • You need additional copy of Standard, higher end HW • Use Hyper-V role on 2nd Server with Premium Add on • Virtualize SBS for easier management • Virtualize Server 2003 for 32 bit apps

Migrating to SBS 2011 Standard Phase 1: Prepare your Source Server • Verify the network configuration: • Source server must be setup with single • NIC behind a router • Install all service packs and updates • Run BPA and fix Errors and Warnings • Run Exchange 2010 Readiness tool • Run Migration Preparation tool • Raises the functional level of AD DS domain to 2003 • Runs adprep32.exe to extend AD schema for SBS 2011 • Backup the source server including 3rd party certificates • Do a test migration

Migrating to SBS 2011 Standard Phase 1: Prepare your Source Server (optional tasks) • Reduce size of data to migrate • Plan to migrate Line of Business application • Migrate DHCP reservations (KB 962355) • Clean up AD by removing unused computers and users • Collect all the usernames and passwords for services such as POP3, domain name config etc. • Download and save any printer or fax drivers • Decide if you want to virtualize the destination server

Migrating to SBS 2011 Standard Phase 2: Install Destination Server in Migration Mode • Create answer file using the Answer File Tool • Save in the root of any drive on the Destination Server • Install the Destination Server using the answer file • Installs and joins the Destination Server to the existing domain • FSMO roles are transferred to the Destination Server • Destination Server becomes the Global Catalog server • Destination Server becomes the Site Licensing server • DHCP is transferred from the Source to the Destination Server • Verify health of DC using dcdiag, repadmin, netdiag

Migrating to SBS 2011 Standard Phase 3: Migrate Settings and Data • Run Connect to Internet wizard to move network settings • Move Exchange Server public folders, mailboxes and OAB • Move user shared data using robocopy command • Move internal website hosted on SharePoint • For SBS 2003 you need to first upgrade to WSS 3.0 SP2 • Setup and move fax data to the Destination Server • Migrate WSUS data and settings • Move Users and Groups

Migrating to SBS 2011 Essentials Phase 2: Install Destination Server in Migration mode • Create answer file using notepad • Save in the root of any drive on the Destination Server • Install the Destination Server using answer file • Join Destination Server to existing domain (manual steps) • Install Certificate Authority • Promote server to Domain Controller • Transfer FSMO roles to Destination Server • Make Destination Server the Global Catalog server • Wait for replication to complete • Reconfigure DNS for the Destination Server • Verify health of DC using dcdiag, repadmin, netdiag

Migrating to SBS 2011 Essentials Phase 3: Migrate Settings and Data • Import users using PowerShell script • Install connector software on client computers • Enables backup and health monitoring • Provides access to the domain for Home SKUs • Copy user shared data using robocopy command • Configure Remote Web Access on the Destination server
