  2. Let’s see; what did we tell you on that first day…

  3. During the Next 6 Weeks… • You’ll get a crash course in the disciplines that make up “English Studies,” going well beyond what is generally offered at the high school level and exploring the very identity of this volatile field. • You’ll complete a major project in a discipline and on a specific topic of your own choosing. Although you’ll consult with instructor mentors, the great bulk of the piece will be built on your own efforts—researching, focusing, developing, shaping, and polishing. • You’ll collaboratively produce your own online magazines, working on all phases of magazine creation and experiencing the habits of real-world scholars. • You’ll complete a Portfolio which will “show off” your work from throughout the 6 weeks and reflect on the experience and what you learned.

  4. And that’s not all… • You won’t have to be embarrassed anymore for enjoying books, being a good writer, and in general going cuckoo for language. • You’ll decide that you want to spend the rest of your of life studying one of the fabulous disciplines in English Studies. Well, maybe 

  5. Ok. So.

  6. Given those questions, as well as all that you’ve experienced over these last six weeks,… • What, would you say, is “English Studies”? Don’t be embarrassed to try out some interesting and even tentative ideas. • What, would you say, are this field’s greatest opportunities and challenges? • How will you describe this field to family, teachers, and friends back home? • What questions do you still have?

  7. What, would you say, is “English Studies”? • The study, art, and practice of the English language and discourses in English. • An academic field at the heart of all fields. • A university department that houses a bunch of different disciplines, all having something to do with language, usually in English.

  8. What, would you say, are this field’s greatest challenges? • Much, much, much more funding and supporting for Creative Writing!!! • Cohesion and coherence at the academic, administrative, and instructional levels. • Balancing resources. • The cross-curricular discourse issue. • Staying ahead of the technology+language curve and maybe even guiding the technology + language curve.

  9. How will you describe this field to family, teachers, and friends back home? • What questions do you still have?
