  2. Memory verse : Matthew 19:8 • He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.

  3. Bible passage • Matthew 19 : 3-12

  4. Bible passage : matthew 19 : 3-5 • 3 The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? • 4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, • 5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?

  5. Bible passage : matthew 19 : 6-8 • 6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. • 7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? • 8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.

  6. Bible passage : Matthew 19 : 9-10 • 9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. • 10 His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.

  7. Bible passage : Matthew 19 : 11-12 • 11 But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given. • 12 For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

  8. Lesson outlines • The Teachings of Jesus Christ • Jesus Christ and the Disciple

  9. The teachings of jesus christ • Mark 10: 2-9, Matthew 19: 3-8 • 1. The Pharisees question on divorce (Matt. 19:3, Mk. 10:2) • 2. Jesus Christ’s answer • 3. What Jesus said about Moses position on divorce (Matt. 19:7) • 4. God Himself joins together a man and a woman in marriage

  10. jesus christ and the disciple • Mark 10: 10-12, Matthew 19: 9-12 • 1. Marriage to a divorcee is living in the sin of adultery (Matt. 5:32) • 2. Divorce on any ground except (PORNEIA – Greek) fornication means you would be making your spouse to live in adultery if such a spouse remarries. Also remarrying after divorce is a violation of ones covenant of fidelity to the previous spouse which should not be broken • 3. Jesus taught the disciple about the sin of adultery as one of the consequence of any one that divorces and remarries • 4. Adultery was never a reason for legal divorce neither among the Jews nor at the time of Moses (Deut. 22 : 22-24)

  11. jesus christ and the disciple CONTD. • 5. During the lifetime of Jesus Christ the punishment or the sin of fornication and adultery was death (John 8:3-5) • 6. The spouse without sin is then free from the marriage contract • 7. Every remarriage following a divorce is living in the sin of adultery (Luke 16:18, Mk. 10:11-12) • 8. Jesus demonstrated that God hates divorce and not the divorcee (John 14: 6 – 18) • We should be there for those going through trauma and pains of divorce

  12. Summary & conclusion • God made marriage to be permanent • Marriage is not a mere civil contract – It is sacred and a lifelong covenant
