Found in rainforests of Southeastern Madagascar. • Restricted to primary rainforests. • Elevations of up to 600-1,400m.
Feeds on new shoots, leaf bases and creepers of endemic giant bamboo. • Shares habitat with other lemurs. • Females give birth to one, occasionally 2, around November- December. • Head and body length- 28-45 cm.
Social animal- 2-6 individuals in the group. • Most active at dawn and dusk. • Bamboo has a high level of cyanide and the lemurs has evolved to be resistant against the cyanide.
The lemur is being threatened by agriculture and timber extraction. • Hunted for food. • Pet trade.
Around 1,000 lemurs estimated to be left. • Maybe a little more that are unaccounted for.
Critically endangered . • There is a conservation but agriculture is encroaching the wildlife parks. • Kept in wildlife parks but are still being hunted.
