  1. Unit Two Where will the road lead us?

  2. A new opportunity... • A new teacher... A new opportunity! • Consider your ‘slate’ wiped clean – that is if you maybe didn't achieve as well as you may have liked, this is your chance to change that as I have no preconceived thoughts on who you are or how you may achieve! • So that means, have a go and start fresh! • No doubt my teaching will be a little different but I still have similar expectations from you!

  3. A little about me... • I graduated from Uni of Ballarat last year and I teach O.Ed, PE & Health • Originally I’m from Horsham (in western Vic) • I play footy & love being in the outdoors • Now... A little about you! • To help me remember everyone I want you to think of something unique about yourself – It could be something no-one else knows about you!

  4. The Website • As a trial this term, I have created a website for students to use. • This website is located at www.mrargallonline.weebly.com • It contains everything we cover in class week by week, all sheets needed, important info, announcements and Homework Tasks – which are like your journals, just a bit different

  5. Recapping... Where are we at? • Started preparing our SACs for presentation next week • Investigating different types of Natural Environments – I.e.?? • Factors that affect natural environments – Geology, Climate, Position & Aspect

  6. Structure of Vegetation • Different Layers? • Emergent • Canopy • Understory • Shrub • Herb/fern layer • Litter Layer

  7. SAC... • TASK: You are employed as Education Officers for Parks Victoria. You are responsible for producing material to educate the general public on the characteristics of one particular Victorian ecosystem and the types of flora and fauna that are found there. • Your task is divided into 3 sections as follows:

Part One (group task): • You must produce a double-sided brochure (using written and visual material) that: • Describes the abiotic characteristics of your ecosystem including: • elevation • temperature • rainfall/precipitation • Describes the biotic components of your ecosystem including: • Vegetation types: identify the particular floral species : trees, shrubs and herbs/grasses • Fauna: describe the animals that inhabit this ecosystem. threatened • Threatened species: • Identify any threatened species ( flora and fauna) that are found in this type of ecosystem

  9. Part Two (group task): • Being experts on your particular ecosystem you must deliver an oralpresentation to the class describing the characteristics of your ecosystem. You must: • Use visual material to support your presentation • Present a map showing where in Victoria your ecosystems are found • Describe past practices that have altered your ecosystems • Discuss current threats to your ecosystems.

Other Parts... • Part Three (individual task): • Each member of the expert group must produce a creative response for their particular ecosystem. eg. this can take the form of a painting/ drawing, a diorama, a poem, a story. • Part Four: References You must use a range of resources including books and internet resources. • A starting point is to use: Your textbook • www.dse.vic.gov.au: Victoria’s Biodiversity Strategy: Our Living Wealth

  11. An guide to how you will be marked... • Brochure20 marks • Oral Presentation 15 marks • Creative response 10 marks • Reference materials 5 marks • Total 50 marks

So where and what to do now? • This is your time to start preparing for your SAC • You may choose to work on your group task together or maybe work on your creative task • You can use your books, the DSE books or requests may be granted to use computers • Presentations will start during the double next week – A signup sheet will go around for the order in which you will present on Monday.
