Do you accept every headline? • List activities outside university where you have used critical thinking skills. • In what way did you employ them? • For example, you may have bought a car recently. • How did you decide which make and model to buy? • Did you take the advice of every salesperson?

  5. studySMART@GCU Critical thinking • Use critical thinking to evaluate the following arguments: • My Gran smoked heavily all her life and she lived until she was 90 so smoking won’t harm me. • • In my study, all of the 20 people that I interviewed said that they believed in corporal punishment for youth vandals so we should start introducing it. • • After having that meal in the restaurant the other night, my sister and I felt really ill. It must have been food poisoning.

  11. studySMART@GCU Making the most of resources • Reading Checklist • Author, publisher, date – too old, current? • Kind of publication – journal, book, newspaper? • Respectable source – ISSN number, peer-reviewed? • What is the main argument in the text? – check abstract or introduction • What evidence is presented? • Am I convinced by this? • References, further reading provided? • Are other points of view considered/discussed? • Is the experiment method and sample size reasonable? • Good use of statistics, graphs? • Is it useful to my background reading or assignment?   12. studySMART@GCU Critical thinking • A critical reader should be able to: • Summarise and outline complex material. • Evaluate a text – is it accurate, authoritative and convincing? • Gauge a text’s importance or significance. • Compare and contrast different texts. • Synthesis information from several texts. • Apply concepts or principles in one text to other texts. • Analyse the way a text achieves its effects. • Critically examine a text’s reasoning.
