  1. A STONE OF STUMBLING “Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offence, and whosoever believes on him shall not be ashamed” (Rom.9:33)

  2. The Sovereignty Of God • He has the right to cast off the Jewish nation, as He had the right to adopt them. • But He does not act unreasonably – v. 32 • They sought Him NOT by faith. • So much about Jesus and God’s plan for salvation confuse us. • Faith? Baptism? Why did He do it that way?

  3. What Is Offensive About Jesus? • His appearance – He was “ordinary”. • Isa. 53:2 • Came from “nowhere”. Isa. 9:1ff. (Matt. 4:12-16); John 1:46? • Messiah should look like “this”. He should be “thus”. • God looks on the heart. Jesus like David.

  4. He Established the Wrong Kind of Kingdom • Luke 17:20 – Within us? No, it must be of this world. • John 18:36. • We seek vindication and exaltation, not service. • “I don’t want to be part of that kingdom.”

  5. He Criticized The Wrong People • The righteous (self). • Matt. 23 • They ignored justice (that which is “right”), mercy and faithfulness. • All that God stood for, they were against.

  6. And, He Forgave The Wrong People • Luke 5:27ff – publicans and sinners. • John 8:1ff – an adulterous woman. • He touched the dirty, including lepers. • Were the children clean when they sat on His knee? • “Of such is the kingdom of God.” • A stone of stumbling and a rock of offence.

  7. But To The Believing…! • What a glorious savior! • “Shall not be ashamed” • Of Him as an object of faith. • Of any of His teachings. • Of any of His true disciples. • We confess Him willingly and continually. • Would YOU?
