This is Leopold II. He used to be the King of Belgium. His colony in Africa, the Belgian Congo, was his personal property.
He used forced labor on his rubber plantations and Belgian officials to collect the severed hands of Africans to keep them afraid of their masters. =
This is a picture from Belgian Congo. You can see it at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art until March 16th. There’s also a photograph of an African whose hands were chopped off by the Belgians. The New York Times called it an example of the “ferocity of Belgian rule in particular.” (February 14, 2003, Page E44)
During World War II, Belgium collaborated with the Nazis and sent 25,631 Belgian Jews to their deaths in concentration camps. This is an ad for Belgians to sign up with the Nazis.
This is Patrice Lumumba, and he was the Congo’s first leader after its independence from Belgium was won in 1960.
Lumumba made people back in Brussels nervous. A document signed by Belgium’s Minister for Africa, Harold Aspremont Lynden, said: "The main objective to pursue, in the interests of the Congo, Katanga and Belgium, is clearly the final elimination of Lumumba."
After being kidnapped, Lumumba was assaulted in the presence of Belgian officers and tortured in a villa guarded by Belgian troops, before being shot by an execution squad supervised by a Belgian captain. His body was exhumed by a Belgian police commissioner, Gerard Soete, and dissolved in acid. (Mr. Soete admitted on Belgian television in 1999 that he had kept two of Lumumba’s teeth.)
Unfortunately, in the real world Belgium is hardly as sweet and lovely as its chocolates.
In the area now known as Rwanda, the Belgians drove a wedge between the Hutus and the Tutsis, two tribes they ruled. In 1994, the Hutus killed 1,000,000 of the Tutsis the Belgians taught them to hate.

In response to the genocide in Rwanda, Israel sent a team of 400 doctors and peacekeepers to help ease the suffering in the former Belgian colony. Belgium recently indicted Israel’s Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, on charges of crimes against humanity.
In 1982, when Mr. Sharon was Israel’s Defense Minister, Lebanese Phalangist militiamen allied with Israel entered Palestinian camps at Sabra and Shatila and killed unarmed refugees. An independent commission found the Phalangist militiamen solely responsible for the massacres at Sabra and Shatila. Not one of the killers has ever been indicted by Belgium. No Belgian official has ever been charged with crimes against humanity in a Belgian court for actions in the Congo or for allowing the Rwandan genocide to take place.
This is Louis Michel, Belgium’s foreign Minister, who recently compared Israelis with Nazis.
If Nazis and Israelis are so similar, then why didn’t Belgium prosecute 14 Nazi war criminals who moved to Belgium after the war, murderers explicitly named in a list sent to the Belgian courts back in 1990? (Jerusalem Post, February 21, 2003)
