Golf History in Europe • Golf undoubtedly originated in Scotland during the 15th century • In 1457 King James II banned the game of golf because his people spent too much time golfing and not enough time practicing their archery for their upcoming war against England • The ban was lifted in 1502 when King James IV picked up the sport • The early game of golf was played by mostly royals and the rich because commoners couldn’t afford the sport.
Early European Golf Equipment • Regular sticks and pebbles are what was used first in the golfing world in the 1500’s • In the 1820’s hickory wood from the US revolutionized clubs, making them lightweight • Lead heads surrounded by wood became popular in the mid 1800’s • Finally in the early 1900’s they started using metal and steel for shafts and heads
Old Course at St.Andrews • One of the most famous golf courses in golf history is St.Andrews • It is the oldest course in the world dating back to 1552 and is located in Scotland • Contains eighteen holes but unlike any other famous course it has 7 shared greens
St.Andrews fame • St.Andrews has one of golf’s biggest icon in the Swilcan bridge. It is widely known in golf and spans between the 1st and 18th hole • St.Andrews is also known for the ruins there because the golf course was built next to a castle dating back to the 1200’s • Another cool things about St.Andrews is that on the 17th hole people have to hit a drive over a building to land their ball in the fairway
Recently at St.Andrews • In 2010 the Open Championship was played at St.Andrew’s and was won by Louis Oosthuizen who finished with a 7 stroke lead • The course record is held by Rory Mcilroy, Simon Pyson, and Luke Donald who all shot a 63.
Cool golf facts • The first golfers didn’t even play with a hole to hit the ball into but just hit the ball back and forth across an area • The term caddie came from Mary, Queen of Scotts, because she used her “cadets” to help her when she golfed who were then given the name caddie
