Kenya • nearly ½ the population is poor & 80% of the poor live in rural areas(IFAD, 2011) • Smallholder farm households rely on own-production for food and income • Increasing smallholder agricultural productivity is one strategy for decreasing food insecurity and rural poverty (Matshe, 2009) and remains underexploited (Hildebrand, 2008)
