Background This task was a consolidation of several proposals that were submitted earlier. • Nondestructive Evaluation of Composite Materials (JPL-2003-11) • Nondestructive Evaluation of Composite Materials Using Ultrasonics (JPL-2003-12) • Nondestructive Evaluation of Fiber Reinforced Plastic Composites Using Radiography (JPL-2003-13)

  3. Objective • To enhance the safety of composite materials, components and structures in NASA and other aerospace applications by providing a comprehensive standard work practice basis for NDE of aerospace composites. • To develop a nationally recognized document work practice standard and physical calibration standards for NASA use. • Customers for this standard are NASA, other government agencies and personnel involved in the inspection of aerospace composite materials and structures.

  4. Approach • Utilize existing resources and leverage current activities during all development phases, which includes collaboration among all NASA centers and industry. • Standard preparation effort will also engage ASNT & ASTM to participate in development and reviews. • This program is one of the most comprehensive standards development, it is also truly a “one NASA” effort for the establishment of an agency-wide standards practice for NDE of composites.

  7. Center Task Descriptions • JPL - Overall task leader and coordinator of all other NASA center activities. Primarily responsible for the delivery of a completed formal standard to NASA Technical Standards Working Group at end of the three year program. • GRC - Utilize multiple NDE technologies to aid in the measurement of damages in reinforced carbon-carbon (RCC) panels (shuttle wing leading edge material) subjected to ballistic impact. • MSFC - Develop a set of guidelines for creating realistic artificial defects in typical fiber reinforced composite materials for NDE quantification and qualification. • WSFC - Identify known inspection methods and their applications as well as existing needs for inspection methods in a wide range of aerospace applications of composite materials. • NTIAC - Perform literature search, contact other government agencies and acquire/review available standards and documents. Interact with ASNT, ASTM and other standards writing organizations. Generate draft and final composite NDE standard document. • JSC - Produce various physical standards and thoroughly characterized by traditional NDE methods. A multi-year effort that involve LaRC, MSFC, KSC, Sandia National Lab, USA and Boeing.
