Afghanistan • 9/11/2001 – US attacked by terrorist group Al Qaeda • 9/20/2001 – President Bush declares war on terror • Request Afghanistan turn over Bin Laden, or else • 10/7/2001 – Operation Enduring Freedom – US and Allies bomb Afghanistan • Taliban refuses to give up Bin Laden • US invades Afghanistan • 11/13/2001 – Northern Alliance (US backed Afghan Group) captures Kabul • 12/2001 – New government setup for Afghanistan • Osama Bin Laden on the Run

  3. Bush Doctrine • Containment and Deterrence = Traditional Foreign Policy • Cold War Policy • Nations were enemies • Bush Doctrine • New Doctrine of preemptive strike • Terrorism new type of war • Need new tactics • Ideas are enemies • Target = Terrorist and Weapons of Mass Destruction

Invasion of Iraq • US and Iraq = Unstable Relations Since 1991 • Saddam Hussein = US friend • Invasion of Kuwait = No longer US friend • Person Gulf War • Weapons Inspection • September 2002 – Bush ask UN to intervene in Iraq weapons program • 1998 Hussein kicked out UN inspectors • Would act alone if UN wouldn’t Act • October 2002 – Congress resolution approved Bush to defend US from Iraq • Iraq = No connection to 9/11 • May have weapons of Mass destruction

Continue • November 8th 2002 – Un Security Council passed Resolution 1441 requiring Iraq to disarm • UN weapons inspectors allowed back in • Bush pushed for military action • March 17th 2003, US withdrew is proposal from UN – UN would not support military action • Announced Diplomacy had failed • March 19th 2003, US invaded Iraq • No weapons of Mass Destruction found • No connection of 9/11 found • Bin Laden still on run • Costly War • December 2011 – Last US troops leave Iraq
