  3. 911 Service – How Does It Works? • The idea behind 911 is pretty simple: Give people a single, easy to remember number to call to receive help during any life threatening situation. • There are 3 types of 911 systems: • Basic 911 • Enhanced 911 • Wireless 911 "9-1-1 Service."   5. 911 Service – How Does It Works? (3) 1. You dial 911. 2. The phone company computer recognizes the number and routes the call to the dedicated 911. 3. At the same time, the phone company gets your number and address to determine the proper 911 location. In most cases, this all takes a little over one second. 4. Your phone company now carries your phone number and address the nearest 911 location. The information is displayed on the call taker's computer when he or she takes your call. 5. The 911 call taker simultaneously send that information to the police computer dispatch with the reason for calling with the help needed.
