  2. * Roles of the President • Head of State/Chief of State: • Represents nation abroad • Performs ceremonial duties • e.g., Lighting Menorah and Christmas tree • Giving awards • Hosts kings, queens, and ambassadors • Public service statements

  3. *Roles of the President • Chief Executive: • Sees that laws of Congress are carried out. (Enforces the law) • Cabinet? • Department of Justice • Headed by Attorney General • Many law enforcement agencies: FBI, ATF, DEA, etc. • Special Powers • Appoint/remove • Pardons, etc.

  4. *Roles of the President • Chief Legislator: • Set Legislative agenda • Propose specific legislation/laws • Support proposed laws • State of the Union- • Speech given by the President once a year explaining how the United States is doing economically, socially, and what the President wants to do.

  5. *Roles of the President • Chief Administrator /Economic Planner: • Runs “bureaucracy”—vast number of federal employees. • Submits annual budget • Sets economic priorities • Cabinets? • Department of Treasury • Department of Labor • Department of Agriculture • Department of Commerce • Department of Transportation • Etc.

  6. *Roles of the President • Party Leader/Party Chief: • Leader of political party • Helps party members who are running for office • “Coattails” Effect • Fundraises for his party • “Patronage” • appoints people to a political office for their support during the Presidents campaign

  7. *Roles of the President • Chief Diplomat: • Directs foreign policy • Cabinet? • Department of State—leads foreign affairs • Helping Agencies • USAID—helps with aid to struggling countries
