  5. Philosophy I hope to inspire my students to become passionate about their quest for knowledge inside and outside of the classroom. What does this mean? I want students to be excited about learning. I believe in cooperative learning, hands-on learning, and learning that continues at home.

  6. Classroom Rules Together, the class created an agreed upon set of rules. • Be Safe • Be Respectful (Quiet Work) • Include Everyone • Pay attention to the speaker • Follow Directions

  7. Curriculum Math • Think Math! will cover a range of math topics including: Basic Operations, Measurement, Geometry, Probability, Time and Money, Data Analysis, and Fractions. A spiral approach will be taken. • Students are expected to gain automaticity with their multiplication facts. • Fastt Math will be used in school for fact practice, but facts should be studied at home!

  8. Learning Environment • I am striving to maintain a positive learning environment for all children. • We will earn gems whenever we are being respectful students • Once the jar is filled, the class will earn a party • I believe in meaningful consequences: • If a student is distracting their group, they will work alone until ready to work with a group • If work is not getting completed because they are talking, they will have to make up some of the work during recess • Each child needs to understand they are responsible for their learning and actions

  9. Curriculum Cont. Reading- • Students participate in leveled guided reading groups to practice a comprehension skill. • Students use a Reader’s Notebook to record the genres read, write letters to the teacher, and to complete their guided reading work. • Nightly homework is to read for 30 minutes. Students can read with a parent, use the Raz Kids website, or read a book of their choice. They need to read!

  10. Curriculum Cont. Writing- • Students will be writing personal narratives, as well as writing to a prompt. • They will use the 6 Traits Writing Skills: Organization, Ideas, Word Choice, Voice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions. • Mcas tests 4th grade students on both kinds of writing. They will be prepared in both types of writing so they will know what to expect.

  11. Curriculum Cont. Science • Rocks and Minerals • Soil/Layers of the Earth • Sound and Light Energy • Engineering Design Social Studies • Map Skills • Regions of the United States • Immigration

  12. Curriculum Cont. Spelling- • The goal for spelling is NOT to memorize a list of 20 words, but to understand a spelling principle. • Students will complete word work in school. They are encouraged to study the words and make connections to new words. Vocabulary- • This year students will try to use new vocabulary words in their daily lives each week. They need multiple exposures of these words in order to truly understand them.

  13. Social Curriculum • Caring School Community: • A research-based, K-6 program that builds classroom and schoolwide community • Lessons and activities integrate community-building efforts across the school day • Consists of: Class Meetings, Homeside Activities, Community Building Activities

  14. Handwriting Without Tears • Students will be practicing cursive • Goal of HWT is to develop and ease in writing a smaller size and to transition to notebook paper.

  15. Homework • Students in 4th grade are expected to read independently for 30 minutes each night. A log is also required so I can monitor the time spent reading and the reading material. • In addition, students are expected to complete 40 minutes of subject-related homework, four nights each week. If your child is generally needing to work in excess of 40 minutes on homework each night, please send the homework back to me with a note. I do not want your child to struggle with homework for over this amount of time.
