  2. STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES 1. Explain the purpose and the History of the FFA 2. Explain the mission and strategies, colors, motto, parts of the emblem, and the organizational structure of the FFA. 3. Recite and explain the meaning of the FFA Creed.

  3. FFA mission Statement FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for PREMIER LEADERSHIP, PERSONAL GROWTH and CAREER SUCCESS.

History • 1917- The Smith-Hughes National Vocational Education Act established vocational agricultural courses. • Named for the Georgia congressmen who wrote the legistlation • 1925- Future Farmers of Virginia was founded by Henry Groseclose and other teachers at Virginia Tech • This would serve as the model for the Future Farmers of America • Henry Groseclose would also be known in the future as the Father of the FFA

  7. History con’t • 1928- FFA established in Kansas City, Missouri • 1st FFA convention in Kansas City Missouri - 33 delegates • Dues were 10 cents • 1930- Official FFA Creed written by E.M. Tiffany was adopted • 1935- New Farmers of America founded • Represented the African American interest in agriculture • 1948- National FFA Week was established in the week in which George Washington's birthday occurs • 1950- Public Law 81-740 was passed by Congress that gave FFA federal chapter • This made FFA an intra-curricular part of agriculture education

History con’t • 1959- National FFA Center built on George Washington’s estate in Alexandria, Virginia. • 1965- New Farmers of America merges with the Future Farmers of America • 1969-Female students were allowed to join FFA • 1974- Fred McClure from Texas is the first African-American elected to a national office • 1982- Jan Eberly (from California) is the first female national FFA president • 1988- Name of the organization was changed to National FFA Organization to reflect the growing diversity of agriculture

History con’t • 1989- Name of The National Future Farmer magazine was changed to New Horizons. • 1999- National FFA Center moved from Alexandria, VA, to Indianapolis, IN. • 1999- The National FFA Convention was moved to Louisville, Kentucky. • 2007- National membership breaks half million mark with 7,358 chapters • 2009- FFA celebrates 40 years of women in the organization

  15. FFA Degree Requirements • Discovery Degree • Be enrolled in agricultural class during 7th or 8th grade • Have dues paid • Participate in at least 1 FFA activity • Have knowledge of agricultural careers • Be familiar with FFA Program of Activities

FFA Degree Requirements Greenhand (bronze pin) • Be enrolled in an agricultural class • Have an SAE • Learn and explain the FFA Creed, Motto, Salute and FFA Mission Statement • Describe and explain the meaning of the FFA emblem and colors • Demonstrate a knowledge of the FFA Code of Ethics and the proper use of the FFA jacket • Demonstrate a knowledge of the history of the organizations

FFA degree requirements Chapter FFA (silver pin) • Must be enrolled in an agriculture class • Must have Greenhand degree • Complete 180 hours of in class instruction • Have an SAE • Participate in planning and conducting of 3 FFA functions • Invested $150 or 45 hours towards SAE • Led group discussion for 15 minutes • Demonstrated 5 procedures of parliamentary law • Apply for Chapter Degree

FFA Degree Requirements State FFA • Must be enrolled in an agriculture class • Must have Chapter degree • Complete 360 hours of in class instruction • Have an SAE • Participate in planning and conducting FFA Program of Activities • Invested $1000 or 300 hours towards SAE • Give 6 minute speech related to agriculture • Demonstrated 10 procedures of parliamentary law • Participated in 5 different FFA activities above the chapter level • Apply for State Degree

FFA Degree Requirements American FFA • Must be enrolled in an agriculture class • Must have State degree • Complete 540 hours of in class instruction • Have an SAE • Participate in planning and conducting FFA Program of Activities • Invested $7500 or $1500 and 2,250 hours towards SAE • Graduate high school • Apply for American Degree

  21. FFA Colors The colors of the FFA are National Blue and Corn Gold. • Blue reminds us that the FFA is a national organization. • Gold reminds us that corn is a native American crop grown in every state.

Offices of Local Chapters • President– Presides over all meetings • Vice-president– Assists president and directs all committee work • Secretary– Keeps minutes of all meetings • Treasurer– Keeps financial records • Reporter– Reports chapter news • Advisor– Advises FFA members on all matters relating to the chapter

  33. Offices Continued • Sentinel– Assists president in maintaining order • Historian- Keeps chapter scrapbook • Chaplain– Takes charge of religious exercises during meetings, banquets, or other occasions • Parliamentarian– Informs the members on correct parliamentary procedure

Official Dress • Female: • Black skirt, white collared blouse with official FFA blue scarf, black closed-toed shoes and official jacketzipped to the top- Black slacks may be worn for outdoor activities • Male: • Black slacks, white shirt, blue FFA tie, black shoes and socks, and the official FFA jacket zipped to the top

Some Guidelines ForWearing the FFA Jacket • It should only be worn by FFA members. • It should always be clean and neat. • It should only have the names of the state association and local chapter on the back. Individual’s name and office of honor should be on the front. • It should be worn with the zipper fastened to all official FFA occasions. • It should not be worn with apparel bearing the insignia of other organizations. • It should be worn with no more than three medals beneath the individual’s name.
