Leif Ericson Marco Polo Christopher Columbus Ferdinand Magellan A young and popular Viking explorer who discovered Vineland (modern day Canada) in 999 AD. Son of Eric the Red, founder of Greenland. In the year 1000 (492 years before Columbus) Leif Eriksson established the first European colony in North America. It was an area where the frost did not fall all winter. Some people think he may have traveled as far south as the Carolinas, Georgia, or even Florida! Then he returned home to Iceland. We celebrate him on October 9th. A renowned merchant who is known both for his explorations and his elaborate storytelling. He was the first European to travel to Asia. He traveled on horse, on foot and by boat. He traveled for nearly 24 years gathering stories of his adventurers before returning home to Venice, Italy with many artifacts from distant lands. He told so many stories of his adventures that many people think he may have exaggerated some of them. When he died he was quoted saying, “I did not tell half of what I saw.” A very popular explorer, he wanted to set up colonies for Spain and to find riches in the Far East. He promised the King and Queen of Spain that he would bring back gold, spices and silks. He sailed from Spain in 1492 with three ships. On his voyagehe set up the colony of Hispaniola. Historians say that he was not the first man to discover America because the Vikings had been there before him. However, he did open up a new pathway from the Old World (Spain, Italy, etc) to the New (America) and changed life forever on both sides. A risk taker of an explorer who proved once and for all that the earth was round by circumnavigating the globe (circled the globe by ship). He led a crew of nearly 300 men and five ships on an experimental journey. Only one of the ships and 18 men returned home. His voyage was filled with misfortune but it proved to the world that the North American continent was separate from Asia. He is also credited with naming the Pacific ocean after a three year long journey. He died in a battle while in the Philippines.
