EXPLAIN WHY!! • Hector thought, "Why did I ever agree to be in this play? I'll never have the nerve to act in front of an audience.” • Violet wanted her friends to let the new girl join the club, but no one else agreed. Violet felt badly for the new girl, but she didn't know what to do about the problem. What does this help me do?: Identify the kinds of conflict present in literary plots

Monday January 9 warm-up agenda: The Origin of Seasons Quiz on Friday 1.What does Echo do that annoys Hera? 2.How does Hera punish Echo? 3.What curse does Aphrodite place on Narcissus? 4.How does this myth explain the creation of an echo and of the narcissus flower? Write 2 to3 sentences explaining. Echo talks too much and tries to distract Zeus. Hera punishes Echo by cursing her to only repeat what is spoken to her. Aphrodite curses Narcissus to fall in love with only himself.

  11. Wonderful Wednesday February 1 Warm-up  Agenda: Today we will look at Propaganda in commercials and in advertisements. WE ARE GOOD. THEY ARE EVIL. STOP THEM FROM DESTROYING US. What were the messages propaganda used during times of war? This type of propaganda encourages you “join the crowd”. This type of propaganda is referred to as “mud-slinging”. (Talking negatively about a competitor). Bandwagon and Name Calling Loaded words and Snob Appeal You are reading a magazine, you come across and advertisement that read “NEW AND IMPROVED! OUR BEST FORMULA YET! Try this AMAZING, DOCTOR RECOMMENDED TOOTHPASTE! You will dazzle like a movie star! What type(s) of propaganda are used here?

  12. Today in class… We will identify types of propaganda techniques used in the media. We will watch commercials and identify what type of propaganda is being used. We will look at advertisements from magazines and identify what type of propaganda is being used.

Now, we will talk about WHY you think they are effective? • Give an example of each of the following types of propaganda: • Bandwagon • Slogan • Plain folks • Snob appeal • Loaded Words • Testimonial • Name-calling

  14. Propaganda: Magazine Advertisements Name the product in your advertisement. Describe the advertisement. Who do you think this advertisement is intended to reach? Identify the types of Propaganda being used in the advertisement. Be specific in your explanation. What message is the advertisement portraying? Why do you think this advertisement is effective? If you could change something about this advertisement, what would it be and why?

You may CREATE your own product OR use an existing advertisement to redesign. You may CREATE World War II Propaganda. You must incorporate all three messages into your project.

WRITE A PARAGRAPH ON THE BACK EXPLAING WHY YOU THINK THIS PRODUCT OR SERVICE WILL BE SUCCESSFUL TO A SPECEFIC GROUP. GIVE YOUR EXAMPLES OR PROP. WWII: CREATE YOUR OWN WWII PROPAGANDA. EXPLAIN WHAT MESSAGES ARE FOUND IN YOUR MESSAGE. WRITE A PARAGRAPH EXPLAING WHY YOU THINK PEOPLE WERE SCARED OF THE ENEMY OR WHY THEY FELT COMPELLED TO HELP THE CAUSE. SUPERBOWL: THREE Commercials. Describe the commercial. Identify the PROPAGANDA YOU MUST HAVE A PARAGRAPH WRITTEN.

Warm-Up Monday, February 5 OBJ: create a piece own authentic propaganda using three propaganda techniques • Propaganda Pop-Quiz: • Which technique of propaganda encourages everyone to “join the masses”? • Which technique of propaganda is also known as “mud-slinging” and often uses negative words when addressing a competitor? • Beyonce, Snookie, Usher, Michael Jordan, Tiger Words, and Justin Beiber all endorse a product. What type of propaganda technique would this be considered? • Using an everyday person in a commercial is an advertiser’s way of trying to get you to identify with him or her. What type of propaganda technique is this? • What were the three messages typically found in World War II Era propaganda?

OBJ: define literary terms and give an example of EACH  This poster is from the World War I Era. What do you think the message of the poster is? What is the poster telling you to do? (hint: it’s not we are good/they are evil/stop them..)

Who would you want on your team?

(NOTE CARDS) You must include SUPERLATIVES (MOST, BEST, LEAST LIKELY, MOST LIKELY, Etc.) Include a quote that person would say or a favorite activity he or she would enjoy. Illustrate your gods/goddess or mythological figures using 5 colors.

Fill out your graphic organizer as you read. You are looking for specific examples of the elements of myth we talked about!! You MUST use specific details from the story.

Do you agree with how Aphrodite treated Narcissus? Why or why not? She talks too much and distracts Hera so that Zeus can return to Mount Olympus. She curses Echo. Echo can only repeat what is said to her. Echo loves Narcissus and he is mean to her.

You will pick out the MOST IMPORTANT WORD from each paragraph (one word ONLY!) The word you pick must be a STRONG word that SUMMARIZES the paragraph. (NOT WORDS LIKE AND, THE, OR… ) You will do this for each paragraph of the story. There are about 28 paragraphs. You will also select THREE scenes from the story that you will visually recreate. These three scenes must visually show the main idea of the story.

What element of myth is this? Persephone Hades Demeter Zeus Iris Hermes It is about the Earth having seasons. The element of myth is that it explains the creation of something.

Why? What would you do in this situation? • Demeter is able to change Zeus’ mind about the marriage of Hades and Persephone. What does this tell you about the “green earth mother?” • What do you think the moral of the story is? Why?

What we are going to do today: Choose one of the following: Comic Strip OR Conflict Poster • Conflict Poster • Create a “Boxing” type Poster for two of the Characters that experience conflict. • You must include a paragraph explain who the characters are and what conflict they experience in the story. • You will then rewrite the conflict in your own words. • Comic Strip • Create a comic strip about The Origin of the Seasons. • You must use four of the six boxes. • Each box must have two characters and dialogue. • Your comic must show conflict. • You must also include three other elements of myth.

Think of a time where music touched your life. Write a paragraph (at least 6 sentences) about the experience. What song can you think of that makes you feel strong emotions? What emotion do you feel? What does this song make you think of?

WHERE: Where did it happen?WHEN: When did it happen? WHY: Why did it happen? Use descriptive words. Paragraph 2: Use two details from the story. Use two quotes a character would say in an interview. (Provide the two questions you asked the character). Close your paragraph with a catchy phrase.
