  2. Fundamental Freedoms • Civil liberties that are important to a properly running democracy • The Charter exists to govern the relationship between the Government and its citizens

  3. Fundamental Freedoms • Sec. 2 of the CCRF protects the following fundamental freedoms: • Conscience and religion • Thought, belief, opinion, expression (includes media) • Peaceful assembly • Freedom of association

  4. A fine line • When does freedom of speech become hate propaganda? • Can freedom of religion jeopardize others’ security? • When does freedom of expression infringe on others’ Charter rights? • When is the assembly of persons no longer considered peaceful?

  5. Freedom of Religion • In simple terms: People in Canada have the right to worship/not worship as they choose. • Religious beliefs cannot be imposed, no one is forced to assimilate • What examples can you think of?

  6. Freedom of thought, belief, opinion, and expression • Have the right to have any opinions, express them and report them (media) • ** you have the freedom to express yourself, but all persons have the right to be free from harassment or discrimination. • Example? • Keegstra

  7. Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and Association • Persons in Canada have the right to demonstrate and express disapproval of government actions as long as said “demonstrations” are peaceful. • Ex: G20?

  8. Your turn! • In groups, read Rajiv’s story. • Consider the following questions: • 1) Does the government regulation on keeping the school safe unjustifiably interfere with Rajiv’s fundamental freedom to practice the Sikh religion? Should he be allowed to wear his Kirpan to school? • 2) Is Harvey correct in claiming that his freedom of expression is being unfairly denied, or was it reasonable for teachers to suggest he stop?
