What are Bonus Points? • Extra points awarded that may help increase a school’s overall school grade. • A way for schools to showcase activities that get student and parent involved in unique and meaningful ways. • Schools can promote their curricular and extracurricular programming that fosters well-rounded students.

What are Bonus Points?—Student Activities Student Activities • Atypical: Activities that actively engage parents and students and go above and beyond expectations • Activities that are student focused and lead by students • Submit according to the two categories: Curricular and Extracurricular • Worth 1 point

What are Bonus Points?—Parent Activities Parent Activities • Atypical: Activities that actively engage parents and students and go above and beyond expectations • Activities that are parent focused and lead by parents • Submit according to the two categories: Curricular and Extracurricular • Worth 2 points

6. What are Bonus Points?—Habitual Truancy Reducing Habitual Truancy • Reducing truancy increases overall points • Calculated through recorded STARS data • Automatically calculated in School Grade • Worth a total of 1 point

7. Who grades Bonus Points? • Educators that have taught from elementary to high school • Extensive experience in student and parent programming • PED administrators • Rigorous evaluators

8. How are Bonus Points calculated? Calculation Example SchooliaExemplia Average of submitted 3 student activities with scores of 0 points, .25 point, and 1 point Average of submitted 3 parent activities with scores of 0 point, .5, point, and 1 point Decreased habitual truancy by 10% Bonus Point Score: 1.92 pts • Parent and student activities are averaged • Averaged parent and student involvement activities are scaled according to point value • Habitual truancy and NMSA data are added and scaled into calculation Scaled point score: Student (1 point), Parent (2 points), NMSA (1 point), Habitual Truancy (1 point) = 5 total points

10. Student Rubric Breakdown • Rubrics rewritten for clarity and simplified • Rubrics are scaffolded in 3 key areas • 1st area is the level of student involvement and impact • 2nd area is community involvement • 3rd area is overall achievement

Student Rubric Breakdown .25 Point • For Extracurricular activities it must be an New Mexico Activities Association program or a school/district created program • Curricular differs by using the language “Regularly-scheduled class or course” • Rigor is assessed in the originality and role of students in the program Student Extracurricular Rubric Self Assess: Are students leading the activity? Is this something the PED has not seen before?

Student Rubric Breakdown .5 Point Student Extracurricular Rubric • Must include all requirements of a .25 point in addition the following: • Community outreach that’s not part of their original programming area • Outreach to other students at the same or different grade levels • Ongoing and consistent volunteerism

18. What is the submission window for this year? • Submission window begins November 15, 2013 at 12:00 am • Submission window ends May 5, 2014 at 5:00 pm • Submissions prior to or after the window will not be accepted
