  5. Activity: Mining the Moon

  6. Moon Mining Rush Ahead? NASA is now accepting applications from companies that want to mine the moon China Looking to Mine the Moon to Solve World's Energy Problems The leader of Beijing's space program has said generating power via nuclear fusion using He-3 could "solve energy demand for 10,000 years at least". It is a lighter version of helium-4, the gas that makes balloons float because it is lighter than air. But while the latter is ubiquitous on Earth, He-3 is comparatively rare. It is now estimated to have 1.1million tons of reserves compared with Earth's stock of just a few hundred kilograms.

  7. Your task: • You and your team have been selected to design a vehicle to transport astronauts and mining material from their moon base to earth and back. • As a team you will draw out your vehicle and specify its main components. • How much will it cost to build your vehicle? • You can use nasa.gov to look up any details you would like to include.

  8. Details • 239,000 mile expanse from earth to the moon • Faced with a skeleton budget, NASA is looking for innovative ways to cooperate with the private sector • Safety and reliability • Crew of 6 and mined materials • Where will you place them? • How will it land and take off? • Weight limit 125 metric tons • What will power your vehicle?

  9. Team Name: Team Members: Vehicle Name: Your drawing board Step 1: Introduce yourselves (first name only) Step 2: Pick a name for your team and vehicle. Step 3: Discuss your vehicle and work together to make your blueprint Step 4: Make sure you have all the details Step 5: Pick someone to present your vehicle
