  2. Introduction • "The best doctor in the world is the veterinarian. He can't ask his patients "what's the matter?" - he's got to just know" - Will Rogers • This quote means a lot because it describes exactly what a vet has to be. They cant just guess what is wrong they have to just know, they cant just ask them like a normal doctor would. I got interested in becoming a vet when I was younger. I have always had pets around and always took care of them when I was growing up. I have been very uncertain of what have wanted to do in the past few years. But I have always come back to being a vet, and wanting to work with animals. I will be researching the nature of work, the working conditions, the education needed, the employment status, and earnings. Also I will be choosing a second back up career of a dog groomer. In order to fully understand this career I need to research the following things, nature of work, working conditions, training and qualifications, employment, and the earnings.

Nature of Work • Examine animals to diagnose their health problems • Treat and dress wounds • Perform surgery on animals • Test for and vaccinate against diseases • Operate medical equipment such as x-ray machines • Advise animal owners about general care, medical conditions, and treatments • Prescribe medication • Euthanize animals

Working Conditions • Mental: emotionally stressful, decision making skills • Indoor: private clinics • Hours: long hours, work nights or weekends, respond to emergencies outside of scheduled work hours • The work environment: animals make noise when sick or being handled, risk being bitten, kicked, or scratched

Training, Qualification, Advancement • Bachelor's degree • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree • Pass the North American Veterinary Licensing Exam • Schooling: Saginaw Valley State University, Major in Pre-Vet • Classes: Biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, zoology, microbiology, animal sciences

  6. Job Outlook/Employment • Employment Rate: expected to grow 36 percent from 2010 to 2020 • need for veterinarians will increase • veterinary programs are competitive • Career Openings: work in St. Clair Shores, Michigan

Dog Groomer • Responsibilities: Bathe animals, trim nails, clip hair, attend to other grooming needs • Working Conditions: pet stores, their own shops, grooming stores • Training: under the guidance of an experienced groomer, grooming schools • Outlook:grow by 23 percent from 2010 to 2020, excellent for most positions • Earnings: $19,780 • I choose this career because I have always thought about doing this if I choose not to become a vet. I was inspired by our family friend Penny. She runs her own dog grooming shop called The Smiling Dog. We have always taken our dogs to her for my entire life. Her love for animals and life inspired me to want to help them and care for them. I always got enjoyment out of helping my mom wash our dogs when we didn’t have a groomer. It was a pretty fun experience that I would like to continue if I don’t become a vet.

  9. Summary • My feelings are still exactly the same about this job. The one thing I look forward to in this career is taking care of the animals and helping them get better. The most least favorite thing is euthanizing the animals. My learning experience after this project is that I will have to work very hard to become the best vet I can be because it is a very competitive job and vet schools are hard to get into.
