  2. Basic Information Hippocrates (hi-pok-ruh-teez) Born in 460 BC Died in 377 BC Born on Island of Cos, Greece Parents are Hercleides and Pracithea Father of Thessalus and Draco Not clear what social class he was in but he would have been in the higher ones because he was a doctor

  3. Life He was a physician Born into a family of physicians Studied medicine with father Also studied with Democritus and Gorgas Called “Father of Medicine” When he was younger, he was trained to be an athlete but wanted to be a doctor instead. Height of career was during Peloponnesian war

Achievements & AccomplishmentsAwards & Honors Founded school of medicine in Cos One of the firsts to explain that health is not based on the balance of elements (wind, fire, water, earth) Spent three years in Athens battling the plague Healed King Macedonia Every person pursuing a career in medicine must take Hippocratic Oath Hippocratic Oath states that you will have ethical, professional behavior Once given a feast and made citizen of Athens, even though he was born in Cos.
