Data and Information Systems • Calls for Needs Assessment for Data Management, Archival and Distribution • At least biennially, the Secretary of Commerce shall • Assess the adequacy of the environmental data and information systems of NOAA; • Develop a comprehensive plan to modernize and improve the environmental data and information systems of NOAA. • Submitted to Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation and House Committee on Science and Technology

  3. 2009 Report to Congress9th in Series, Submitted November 3, 2010 • Assessment of Current Capabilities • Consistency and general improvement from 2007: • Successes: Data Discovery, Planning, and Complete Metadata • Challenges: Appropriate Formats and Data Collection/Rescue • Data Management themes: • Managing increasing data volumes • Filling gaps and extending the environmental record • Improving metadata and processing steps • Improving data access • Enabling data integration • Special focus: “What to Archive” procedure • Based on 2007 National Research Council Report: Environmental Data Management at NOAA

  4. 2009 Report to Congress9th in Series, Submitted November 3, 2010 • Comprehensive Improvement Plan • Key Focus: Global Earth Observation – Integrated Data Environment (GEO-IDE) Initiative • Access through Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and standards-based data and information infrastructure • Near-Term Improvement Activities • Strategy for Integrated Portal Development • Survey of geospatial data requirements • Strategy to address model data processing and access issues (e.g., data storage and computational requirements) • Longer-Term Projects for Modernized Data Management • CLASS, CDMP, AWIPS, IOOS, CDRs • Implementation High-Level Milestones from FY09 – FY18
