  3. Division at Corinth • Condemned by Christ, v. 10 • “Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that there be no divisions among you…” • Cf. John 17:20-23

  4. Division at Corinth • 2 Things required to be “of Paul” – v. 13 • Paul crucified for you • Baptized in the name of Paul • We must be baptized in the name of Christ to be “of Christ.”

Division at Corinth • Unity is found in God’s word. • 1:17-18, 21-22 • 2:2, 10-16 • 4:6 Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that you may learn in us not to think beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up on behalf of one against the other.

Sin in their midst • 1 John 3:4-10 • 1 Corinthians 5:5 deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. • 1 Corinthians 5:11 But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—not even to eat with such a person.

  9. Failure to handle disputes correctly Matthew 18:15-17 “Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’17 And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.

  10. Failure to handle disputes correctly 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

Abuse of the Lord’s Supper • The principle involved: satisfying the flesh instead of properly worshiping God • Coffee and donuts to start • Bands and storytelling • Meals and recreational activities afterward • John 4:23-24 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
