Syllable OS: An Open Source Desktop and Server Solution

Syllable is an alternative operating system developed since June 2002 by a small core team including Kristian Van Der Vliet, Kaj de Vos, and Anthony Morphett. It is designed for personal computer architecture, with a separate server version also available. Drawing inspiration from the now-abandoned AtheOS, Syllable features a native file system (Read/Write AFS), supports various file systems including FAT and Linux ext2/3, and offers a GUI for ease of use. It is completely open source, free to use, and suitable for home or office environments, though it suffers from limited application support and compatibility issues with Windows executables.

  2. Who Developed the OS and When • “There is a small core team of developers, comprised of Kristian Van Der Vliet (Vanders), Kaj de Vos and Anthony Morphett. There are also other developers who write patches, create applications and port software for Syllable” (Syllable, 2011). • June 2002 to present.

  3. What Platform is the OS for? • Syllable (desktop) is built for the personal computer architecture. • However, there is a server version which is built for server architecture. That being said, it is based on Linux, whereas the desktop version is not.

  4. History • What influenced its development? • Syllable is influenced by the AtheOS which ended at version 0.3.7. • AtheOS was an OS built by Kurt Skauen but later abandond. • Other OSs derived from it? • Currently, the only other OS derived from Syllable is the server OS. However, Syllable itself is derived from the AtheOS.

Features • Read Write AFS which is a native file system to Syllable. • Read Write FAT file systems. • Read Write CD-ROM ISO9660 • Read Write Linux ext2/3 • Read Write NTFS • Can be used in Virtual Machines • Completely open source • Free • For home or office use • GUI Based OS similar to Linux, easy to use

  6. Limitations • No compatibility with Windows executables • Very basic OS with limited application support. • Still a bit buggy • Development is dependent on free labor • This means that the life time of the OS can drop off suddenly (think AtheOS).
