What is “plot”? • The series of related events that make up a story. • The underlying structure of a story. • Plot is made up of a series of events that lead to the climax of the story. • Think about the events as episodes of your favorite television show with the climax being the season finale. • The events are often the circumstances that a character encounters as he/she tries to resolve the conflict.

  3. “THE PARDONER’S TALE” • PLOT EVENTS: • The three rioters see a coffin pass by the tavern and discover that their friend has died. • They decide to find Death and kill him. • They meet an old man who tells them to look for Death near a tree. • Beneath the tree, they find bags of gold florins. • They draw straws, and the youngest goes to town to get food. • The oldest two decide to stab the youngest. • The youngest decides to poison the other two and buys poison. • The youngest is stabbed to death. • The oldest two drink the poison and die.

  4. PLOT What are the basic plot events in “The Wife of Bath’s Tale”? With a partner: Make a list of 5 plot events in this tale and place them in chronological order. Be prepared to share.

  5. USING PLOT EVENTS IN YOUR TALE. Now you know what plot events are and how they are used as the skeletal structure of a story, you will now create a list of at least 10 plot events for your own tale. Keep the following question in mind: How will these events help the character(s) in your tale to resolve his/her conflict? I will be collecting your lists. 
