The Sixth Grade Team Chris Bailey Katie Browning Shannon Manista Amanda Ferrell We will be working together to: plan common lessons and activities assess students to gather data & arrange flexible groups when possible to better meet the needs of our students effectively utilizing & managing the time in each school day

  9. Absences Difficult for students to excel when they miss school. Our schedule is so full that its extremely difficult to catch up We all get sick or have family business Schedule appointments and vacations around school whenever possible In most cases, two days per day absent to make up missed work Tests taken within two days of absence Student’s responsibility to meet with me

  10. Communication Notes, email or phone calls Please check their planner and all work that comes home Keep everything until the end of the trimester Keep Science workbook to review before 7th grade CST testing Keep Social Studies notes to review before 8th grade CST testing

Homework Every Monday through Thursday with occasional long-term projects Should take 60-90 minutes All students are different Amount of time reflects student’s ability and work/study habits Students must write assignments in their planners Will not be posted on the website Important they take responsibility

  15. Your Role in Homework Support concept that homework is important Encourage them Provide a study area and the necessary time & supplies DO NOT COMPLETE FOR THEM You wouldn’t play their soccer game for them! You may answer questions if you’d like, but the goal is to work toward independence

  16. Math Homework Every Monday through Thursday Important to complete daily Each lesson builds on the previous Have to keep up 2 parts per day Problem Solving/Challenge Book work: Independent Practice and Spiral Review Credit for completing on time Textbook can be found on www.ocgrade6.com

  17. Language Arts Homework Weekly Choice Activities Tic-Tac-Toe (began last week) Receive every Monday Due every Friday Should work on throughout the week It’s an awful lot if left to do on Thursday!

  18. Reading Logs Monthly Reading Logs (due the first of the next month) Should read 100 minutes per week Average of 20 minutes per weekday Daily Reading Responses Instructions the Language Arts section of their binders or on www.ocgrade6.com Choice activities: 3 per week

  19. Social Studies& Science Assigned at various intervals Most will be a continuation of notes begun in class Textbooks can be found on www.ocgrade6.com

Grading Homework, classwork, tests and projects are all measurements of progress toward State Standards Traditional percentages and letter grades for classwork, quizzes, tests and projects Math homework is worth 8 points daily (4 per assignment) if completed on time Grades will be accessible online through the Parent Portal Same way to access report cards Three report cards per year

Tests and Project Due Dates Reading comprehension and spelling/grammar tests every Friday Other curricular areas tested as each unit of study completed Upcoming tests are recorded in planners several days in advance Project due dates clearly listed on assignment sheets Also tracked on classroom calendar

Late Work All students will be held accountable for completing all assigned work Working on teaching independence and responsibility as they get ready for middle school I will accept late work (at a deduction of 10% per day, including weekends) until a week or so before the end of the trimester Will affect effort grades

Language Arts Reading – leveled groups (RtI) 3 times per week for 85 minutes per session Time for Kids (Social Studies) Monthly Reading Logs Writing – monthly projects completed AT SCHOOL New Common Core Standards emphasize non-fiction writing Spelling, grammar, vocabulary instruction Tic-Tac-Toe homework Mountain Language Scholastic book orders

Math Daily instruction: Pre-Algebra Bellwork: Daily math practice with critical thinking Notes taken daily and kept in binder Homework: Bookwork and Problem Solving/Challenge (choice) Quiz or test every week (roughly) Monthly math project May use calculators for SOME assignments Basic Facts tested (They should have them memorized by now!) Results shared at conference

Science Classroom instruction utilizing textbook & Science Notebooks Focus on Earth Science & note taking Tests are multiple choice, fill in, and concept maps May use Science Notebooks so make they’ll need to be sure they’re completed on time Lab twice per week with Mrs. Van Vorhis (Tue and Thurs) Science Fair Project Parent Information Night on October 10th from 6:45-7:45

  27. Social Studies Classroom instruction utilizing textbook, note taking and projects Geography and ancient civilizations Integrated with Language Arts Tests: multiple choice, fill in, short answer First trimester: open note, second trimester: study guides, third trimester: none

  28. Bellwork Most often, Mountain Language and Daily Math Given on Mondays, due Fridays Should be done in class Meant to be a challenge and teach independence by locating information themselves

  29. Technology Computer Instruction with Mrs. Rubel Computers one to three times per week In pod, in-class laptops (COWs) Word processing PowerPoint Internet research Keyboarding and Word processing

  30. Fine Arts & P.E. Music – twice per week (Mon and Wed) Art – six times per year with Mrs. Reigle P.E. – Tuesdays and Thursdays Overall fitness and team sports Need appropriate shoes and dress PE policy – sign and return President’s Challenge Fitness Awards

  34. Conferences Be sure to sign up for a Fall (Goal Setting) Conference Parent, Student and Teacher! October 25th and 28th-31st

Mr. Grasso’s Reminders Children on campus by 8:10 Students are in classrooms and ready to begin at 8:15 to prevent lost instructional minutes Please walk/ride/scoot whenever possible Children in lower grades with older siblings are asked to wait by the flagpole, not classroom doors Parents are asked NOT to come onto campus early Parents and children are asked to leave campus (especially playground) immediately after school. Go to the park for more social time.
