  2. EXISTING AGREEMENT; A PILOT • Agreement in its third year • Real funding form DOE/Match from NASULGC institutions • Projects to demonstrate opportunities • Five per year • Not likely to be extended—4 years total • Has shown great possibilities for cooperation

  3. NASULGC/DOE PROJECTS • Enhance EERE program impact, regional • Institutionalize Extension outreach capacity • Youth education about energy • Joint university/EERE lab workshops • Develop EERE and university relationships • Funding about one mil per year

  4. BIO ECONOMY CONSORTIUM • Objectives are to promote the interests of partners • Help the DOE/EERE meet its objectives • Help USDA meet its objectives • Grow and develop the bio economy

  5. CONSORTIUM MEMBER ACTIVITIES • State Secretaries, report on state level initiatives • Extension, develop training and education programs • Industry, advocacy--federal and state • Experiment Stations, report on research and perhaps develop multi state projects??

  6. OTHER POSSIBLE ACTIVITIES • Educational programs on the ethanol futures • Industry structure studies • Improved marketing • Improving by-product quality • Cellulose as a feed stock • Energy efficiency education/training • International situation

  7. SCHEDULE FOR ACTION • Meet twice per year, first in early 2007 • One representative from all organizations that elect to join • Set simple and clear tasks for each set of organizations • Most of communication by web page • Perhaps a small staff to manage meetings and web page

  8. EXPERIMENT STATION INTEREST • Is there interest • What could we change to make it more attractive • Not just a Midwest initiative • Is the time schedule reasonable

  9. EXTENSION DIRECTORS MOU • Education/training programs, residential and commercial • Organize participation in the BEC • Work with state energy offices • Investigate partnering with ASSERTTI • Make sure Coop Extension participates • Try to get connected with DOE Labs • Explore Washington base for the program
