Wiz Khalifa Pop Culture Relationships The affects of Rap and Hip-Hop Music on Adolescents • Distorted views of women and expectations. • Early sexual activity. • Peer pressure to experiment with drugs and alcohol. (Berk, 2010, p.299). • Lack of self-esteem if you don’t look and act a certain way (seductive). “From a study done in 2009, statistics shows that of those members of the population who are 12 years of age and over 8.7% had used an illicit drug in the past month, 6.6% had used marijuana, and 2.8% had used some form of hallucinogenic.” Statistics Behavior & Mood • The average adolescent is exposed to 84 references to explicit substance use per day. • Only 4% of all music is anti drug and alcohol messages. • 40% of U.S. young people have tried cigarette smoking, 63% drinking, 38% at least one illegal drug. (Berk, 2010, p.300). • Increase in risk-taking behaviors. • Aggression & violence. (Berk, 2010, p.332). • “I don’t care” attitudes. • Addictive behaviors. (Berk, 2010, p. 300). • Lack of aspirations and goals. • Feeling above the law. 2 Chainz Lil Wayne Wiz Khalifa- Young, Wild & Free Lyrics Observation Experience Sarah LeightonEDST 20022013 “So what we get drunk So what we smoke weed We’re just having fun We don’t care who sees So what we go out That’s how its supposed to be Living young and wild and free.” I was able to observe an urban high school, Middletown. Since I already believed music and its content could shape mood and tone for good or bad, it wasn’t hard to find lots of examples in my school observations to support my belief. The instances where I saw kids listening to rap or hip hop music in the halls, music loud enough for me to hear and to be a real distraction, also involved kids who tended to act out more towards classmates or adults. They were the kids who had more of a group mentality and were bolder in their actions as a “pack” than they would be individually.
