  1. Colossians 3:1-11 Christ in Colossians

  2. Colossians 3:1-4 Living as Those Made Alive in Christ “1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your[a] life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”

  3. Colossians 3:5-8 “ 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.[b]7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.”

  4. Colossians 3:9-11 “9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.”

  5. Into & Recap • Colossians Ch 1-2 • Doctrinal teaching about Jesus • Who he really is and what he has done for us. • Theme of Colossians is that Christ is the pre-eminent person of the Universe. He is 1st and foremost in everything. • Colossians Ch 3-4 • Is the practical outworking of that teaching as it pertains to our lives. • Paul in this letter to the Colossians applies it in Ch 3&4 into the area of our relationships.

  6. Colossians Ch 3 – Relationships • 3:1-8 = Our Relationship with Christ • 3:9-17 = Our Relationships within the Local Church • 3:18-21= Our Relationships within the Family • 3:22-4:1 = Our Relationships within the Workplace • 4:2-6 = Our Relationships with those who don’t believe in Jesus Christ

  7. Our Relationship with God Last week we made a start & we said: • We have the power to set our hearts and minds on whatever we want. • Paul tell us we should be setting our hearts and minds on Jesus Christ, if we are to maintain an effective relationship with God. Ch 3:1-4 • The enemy seeks to distract our hearts and minds away from Jesus.

  8. How we can maintain our Relationship with God Please note vs. 5 & 9. “Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed…” “Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices…” Notice: “Old Self” & “it’s practices” “earthly nature” & “the list of sins”

  9. The Problem in our Relationship with God Man’s Dual Problem The sin’s (sinful acts) we commit – which are many and can be listed, for which we need forgiveness. & Our earthly, sinful nature – which is the factory that produces the sins we commit, from which we need emancipation.

  10. The Solution for our Relationship with God God’s Remedy to Man’s Dual Problem God’s answer and only answer to all of our problems is and always will be to show us more of His Son, Jesus. Jesus is our Substitute, God substitutes Jesus in our place. Hence the encouragement vs. 1-4 – Focus on Jesus.

  11. The Solution for our Relationship with God In all God’s dealings with us he works by taking us out the way and substituting Jesus in our place. Jesus died instead of us for our forgiveness. Jesus lives instead of us for our emancipation.

  12. The Solution for our Relationship with God Jesus died instead of us for our forgiveness. Jesus lives instead of us for our emancipation. So we can speak of two substitutions: A Substitute on the Cross where Jesus’ shed blood, secures our forgiveness for the sins we have committed. A Substitute within our Lives where Jesus secures our victory and freedom from our sinful nature.

  13. The Solution for our Relationship with God Two aspects of Jesus work of salvation and substitution on our behalf, viz. Jesus’ Blood & Jesus’ Cross. Jesus blood deals with what I have done (sinful acts). Mat 26:28 Rom 5:9 1John1:7 Rev 1:5 Col 1:19-20 Rom 3:21-25a & 28 1John2:12

  14. The Solution for our Relationship with God Two aspects of Jesus work of salvation and substitution on our behalf, viz. Jesus’ Blood & Jesus’ Cross Jesus cross deals what we are (our sinful nature). 1 Pet 2:21; Heb 2:10; 5:8-9; 12:2-4; 4:15-16; 2:18; Mat 10:38-39; 16:24-27; Heb 12:11

  15. The Solution for our Relationship with God Two aspects of Jesus work of salvation and substitution on our behalf, viz. Jesus’ Blood & Jesus’ Cross The blood disposes (forgives) of our sins. The cross strikes at the root of our capacity to sin, it deals with (destroys) our sinful natures.

  16. The Blood of Jesus as our only Basis of Relationship with God Let’s look closer at the problem of our sins and the blood of Jesus to deal with our sins and restore us in our relationship to God. Rom 3:23 Rom 5:8-9 Rom 3:24-26 Sin enters the world at the fall as an act of disobedience to God. Immediately, man felt naked, ashamed and guilty.

  17. Sins destruction of our Relationship with God Results of Sin Sin creates 1st, a relational separation between God and man. Man is put away from God. God can no longer have fellowship with man, for there is something now that hinders fellowship and that through out the bible is known as “Sin”. It is God, 1st, who says “THEY ARE ALL UNDER SIN” Rom 3:9

  18. Sins destruction of our Relationship with God Results of Sin 2nd, Sin in man, which caused the separation and forms a barrier between God and man, gives rise to a sense of guilt in man (man feels estranged from God). Here man, with the help of his awakened conscience, says “I HAVE SINNED” Luke 15:18

  19. Sins destruction of our Relationship with God Results of Sin 3rd, this “sin” provides Satan with his ground of accusation , against us, before God. While our sense of guilt gives him his ground of accusation in our hearts. “the accuser of the brethren” Rev 12:10 spits out into our hearts & minds. “YOU HAVE SINNED”

  20. Sins destruction of our Relationship with God To redeem us and bring us back into relationship with himself, God, through Jesus, has to do something about these 3 questions of: • sin before God • our sense of guilt & shame • satan’s charge against us

  21. The Blood of Jesus as our only Basis of Relationship with God 1st Our sins before God had to be dealt with, this was effected by the Precious blood of Jesus. 2nd Our guilt and shame has to be dealt with and our guilty consciences set at rest, this is done by showing us the value of Jesus’ blood. 3rd The attack of the enemy has to be dealt with and his accusations answered.

  22. The Blood of Jesus as our only Basis of Relationship with God In the bible – Jesus Blood is shown as operating effectively in these three ways: • Godward • manward • Satanward As believers we must have a foundational understanding of the fact of the death of the Lord Jesus as our substitute on the cross and a clear understanding of the effectiveness of his blood in dealing with our sins.
