GILBERT STUART, Lansdowne Portrait • Commissioned in April 1796 by Senator William Bingham of Pennsylvania—one of the wealthiest men in the U.S. at the time—and his wife, Anne • Gift of appreciation to British Prime Minister, an American sympathizer • Washington at 64 years old renouncing a third term as U.S. President • Full of symbolism American and Roman

  4. GILBERT STUART, Athenaeum Portrait • 1796 • Unfinished • Originally for the Boston Library, they did acquire it after his death • When the president came to sit for the portrait, his newly acquired set of false teeth created a bulge around the mouth and distorted his jawline

  5. Greenough, George Washington • Make him look heroic. • Trying to look like Greek art. • Americans found it comical

  6. FREDERIC CHURCH, Twilight in the Wilderness • 1860 • An Iconic American painting • Inspired by the sheer vastness of the Americas • The eagle (American Power), crossed branches (Christianity), absence of humans (Frontier) • The blood red tide glooming almost foreshadowing the Civil War
