  2. 20th Century Poverty • Students get separated in the classroom based on wealth • Bathroom use • Francie gets pulled out of High School to make money because Katie had the baby.

  3. Gender and Sex • Neeley continues in school because Katie favored him, and she thought Francie was strong. • Candy store for boys only • Women attack the pregnant young girl • Women turned against each other very easily

  4. Perseverance through hardship • Francie’s difficulty with Johnnie’s alcoholism. He knows he is a bad father i.e. the boat trip • Johnnie’s death and Katie was pregnant with the third child (Annie Laurie) • Francie eventually gets to college • Sissy adopting a child

  5. Education – it served as a way out • Francie goes to college because of her extensive reading • Katie’s children read a page from the Bible and a page of Shakespeare.
