  2. ADD vs. ADHD • No real difference between the two • ADD is an out of date term • ADD is the inattentive subtype of ADHD

  3. What is ADHD? • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a problem of not being able to focus, being overactive, not being able control behavior, or a combination of these. • Must be out of the normal range for a person's age and development to be diagnosed as ADHD

  4. What Causes ADHD? • No distinct known cause • Thought to be stemmed gene interactions • Non-genetic factors that may contribute to ADHD: • Smoking/drinking during pregnancy • Exposure to lead or other toxic substances • Extreme neglect, abuse, or social depravtion

  5. Subtypes of ADHD • Predominantly Hyperactive: Mainly hyperactive or impulsive symptoms, few or no inattentive symptoms. • Predominantly Inattentive: Mainly inattentive symptoms, few or no hyperactive symptoms (ADD). • Combined: Both inattentive and hyperactive symptoms.

  6. Symptoms of ADHD Subtypes • Hyperactive subtype: - Fidgeting or squirming - Getting up frequently to walk around - Difficultly playing quietly - Running or climbing at inappropriate times - Excessive talking

  7. Symptoms of ADHD Subtypes • Inattentive Subtype: - Inability to sustain attention on tasks - Making careless mistakes - Frequent shifts from one uncompleted activity to another -Procrastination -Disorganized work habits -Forgetfulness in daily activities

  8. Daily Life • Becomes difficult to learn new things • Disorganization causes misplacement of valued objects • Difficulty making new friends • A feeling of isolation

  9. ADHD into Adulthood • 60% of children who have ADHD will have the illness into adulthood • 4-5% of all adults have ADHD • ADHD may causes adults to lose jobs • ADHD makes it very difficult to support a family

  10. Treatment • Medications: • Stimulants – The best known and most widely used treatment. • Nonstimulants – Approved for treating ADHD in 2003. Fewer side effects than stimulants and can last up to 24 hours.

  11. Treatment • Behavioral Therapy • Helps child change behavior • Teaches child monitor behavior • Teaches child to praise himself/herself after acting a desired way • Best if therapy aided by parent or teacher
