  2. Reflection #1 Write down what you hope to get out of this unit!

  3. Bell Work #2 Objective: To connect to the story, “Sophistication.” Directions: Think about what it’s like to be at your age 16-18. What are your expectations, hopes, feelings about being on the edge of adulthood? Write your thoughts down.

  4. Sophistication Objective: To understand flashback, theme and character types after using reading strategies. Directions: Use this rubric to help you comprehend the story. Go step by step. Grading: You will be given a mark from 1 – 4, with 4 being the best. However, a score of 1-10 will be put into Infinite Campus for technical reasons. All study guides for this unit will be graded this way. Please see the bottom for more detail.

Grading 4 = 10 (ic) 3 = 8.5 (ic) 2 = 7.5 (ic) 1 = 6.5 (ic) *I may give grades between these, which will be indicated by a +/- mark. 4 = all answers are well thought out, supported and thorough 3 = most questions are well thought out, supported and thorough, but there was room for more exploration and explanation 2 = student attempted an answer, but most answers are not well thought out, supported nor thorough 1 = student has incomplete answers and/or the answer illustrates little to no true attempt and exploration/explanation

  6. Pre-reading: • Cluster diagram about the word sophistication for two minutes. Think hard! • Write down new information you learned about the modern era of stories, the timeline, the author and the story. Get 6-8. • Set a purpose for reading.

  7. Reading 4. Make two connections as you read. As two open ended questions as well. 5. Annotate for your purpose.

  8. Reflection #2 Directions: Answer this question. Find the most difficult or interesting quote so far. Explain why you chose it and what you THINK it means.

  9. Bell Work #3 Objective: Review what’s happening in the story so far. Directions: Answer these questions. What is the title? Who is the author? Who are the main characters? What has happened so far? What was the quote you pulled out for reflection on Friday and what does it mean to you?

  10. Reflection #4 Directions: If you were to teach this story to someone else, what would you focus on and why?
