Canola Oil Background • Until the late 1960’s rapeseed oil was Canada's main oil • Erucic Acid concerns were raised • As a result traditional breeding techniques to develop superior strains of rapeseed plants that had reduced levels of erucic acid & other non-nutritive components • In the late 1970’s canola was developed to distinguish the new plant from rapeseed • In 1985 canola oil was granted GRAS, generally regarded as safe, status

Canola Oil Health Benefits • Contains Vitamin E, Oleic acid, and Alpha-linolenic Acid • These are all shown to decrease blood cholesterol, lower • LDL-cholesterol and protect against heart attacks • Good source of Vitamin E • Alpha-tocopherol is the main active molecule of Vitamin E • One tablespoon of canola oil provides about 25% of the RDA for alpha-tocopherol • Vitamin E is an antioxidant in preventing oxidative damage within cell membranes
