  2. What is it? 'Emotional abuse is the persistent emotional ill treatment of a child such as to cause severe and persistent adverse effects on the child's emotional development...' (AWCPP, 2008. p.32)

  3. What are the signs? • Features(signs of perpetration) • Rejecting • Isolating • Terrorizing • Ignoring • Corrupting • (Barker, and Hodes, 2007. pp. 51-52 also Evans, 2002.) • Symptoms(signs of victimisation) • Dependent on age and severity of abuse. • Physical, mental and emotional development lags • Sudden speech disorders • Continual self-depreciation • Overreaction to mistakes • Extreme fear of any new situation • Inappropriate response to pain • Neurotic behaviour • Extremes of passivity or aggression • (www.kidscape.org.uk, 2010)

  4. Who are the perpetrators? • Occurs across all socio-economic groups (Scott-Roberts, 2011; Adams, 2002) • Usually primary caregivers (Barlow and Schrader, 2010. p.21) • Can be result of intergenerational cycle of abuse (Lawson, 2001. p.508) • Can be result of multiple 'sources of stress' (Edwards, 2002.p.15)

  5. Who are the victims? 'Emotional abuse impairs the child's...emotional development with a potentially lifelong influence on any capacity to develop close relationships' (Barker and Hodes, 2007. p. 50) Short-term Effects (eg) Compromised healthy brain development, low self-esteem, physical symptoms of anxiety i.e bedwetting and asthma (Edwards 2002 p.15) , difficulties in social interaction or isolated, behaviour problems, underachievement (Beckett, 2003. p.77) Long-Term Effects (eg) Anxiety, depression, shame and poor psychological functioning, dissociation, PTSD, eating disorders, dating violence, adult sexual victimization, somatic concerns, BPD, aggression in later childhood, self-abusive behaviour, attempted suicides, pyschopathology (Barlow and Schrader, 2010. pp.30-31)

  6. What can you do? • 'Articulate concerns about negative parent/child interactions' (Barker and Hodes, 2007. p.55) • 'Share concerns with other experienced colleagues' • (Barker and Hodes, 2007. p. 22) • Be a 'loving caregiver' (Barlow and Schrader, 2010. p. 30) • Promote resilience and coping mechanisms (Edwards, 2002) • In case of potential SH, you have a responsibility to report to social services, PCPU, or NSPCC. (NSPCC, 2011. Lindon, 2008. p.21)
