Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical health concern in Europe and globally, with rising levels observed from 2001 to 2005. Evidence shows a direct correlation between antibiotic use and AMR across EU member states. Key recommendations include developing national strategies, enhancing local ownership, establishing inter-sectorial committees, and improving surveillance on antibiotic use and resistance. To combat AMR effectively, promoting proper hygiene and awareness campaigns along with consistent follow-ups and EU-level initiatives is imperative. Collaboration among health stakeholders is essential for managing this pressing issue.

Antimicrobial resistance remains one of the serious European and global health problem • In most MS between 2001 and 2005 an increase of the burden of antimicrobial resistance can be observed (EARSS)
marked differences in AB use between EU countries and in the types of AB that are used • consistent association between the level of use of certain AB and resistance to these AB has been reported confirming the suspected relationship between AB use and AMR in EU countries
Recommendations on prudent use of antimicrobials in human medicine adopted in 2001 • MS,European Commission and EU agencies (ECDC, EFSA, EMEA,…) have taken variety of actions
What are the areas of the Recommendations where the actions need to be improved?
Need for… • developing national strategy with translation to action plan • ensuring ownership at the local level
Need for… • Setting up inter-sectorial mechanism, e.g. a national committee, involving all relevant stakeholders with the clear mandate and political support
Need for… • Strengthening surveillance systems and data quality on antimicrobial resistance, use of antimicrobial agents and healthcare-associated infections
Need for… • Promoting good hygiene practices for the control of the transmission multidrug resistance bacteria
Need for… • Promoting prudent use of antibiotics through awareness campaigns with credible, scientifically based messages and actions, aimed at the practitioners and general public and include information about the risk of self-medication
Need for at EU level… • Follow – up on the implementation of Council Recommendations • Continue with “Health in all policies approach” in this area through EU initiatives
Need for at EU level • Continue with activities within the ECDC in this area (country visits, recommendations, scientific work, surveillance) • Exchange of best practices among MS • Antibiotic Awareness Day
