  4. What are germs? • Germ is another name for bacteria and viruses. They are like small bugs that are so small you cannot see them without a microscope. • Bacteria and viruses can invade plants, animals, and people. A lot of bacteria can live in your body and will not hurt you. They sometimes cause disease.

Bathrooms, Floors, Soil, Garbage Pails • Your Body Skin, mouth, intestines One square inch of skin may contain up to 10,000 germs. Since germs are everywhere, so there is no way that someone could be completely germ-free.

  6. How do germs spread? Germs get into our bodies one of four ways: Ingestion: we eat them or drink them Inhalation: we breathe them Blood stream: they are injected Absorption: through the skin

  7. What Your Body Does To Protect You • First line of defense - skin and mucous membrane • Second line of defense is your immune system

  8. The Immune System • This body system, which includes white blood cells, helps protect your body from disease. The immune system has different parts, all of which work together to fight off outside invaders like germs. Every day your immune system does battle to keep you healthy and feeling your best . • White blood cells, or macrophages are like soldiers that attack germs. • Other types of white blood cells make chemicals called antibodies that destroy or weaken bad bacteria and viruses. • Antibodies will remember a germ, and if it comes back it will recognize it and how to fight it. • Vaccines or shots help your body build antibodies.

  9. What You Can Do to Protect Your Body • Wash your hands- Before eating After playing outside After using thebathroom After coughing/sneezing  When your hands are visibly dirty  • Keep your fingers out of your mouth When you lick your fingers you are eating bugs • Do not share food or personal equipment towels, brushes, razors • Do not touch anybody else’s body fluid Blood, saliva, mucus, etc. If it is wet do not touch it

  10. Be a Good Citizen • Do not make other people sick • People with poor immune systems get sick more easily. • Stay home from school when you are sick • Try to cover your cough or your sneeze with your arm
