Folk HousesPre-Railroad The first period of American folk architecture was built by European colonists between the earliest permanent settlements of the 17th century and the growth of the railroads as an efficient national transportation network in the last half of the 19th century. These dwellings were constructed of local materials such as wood, earth, and stone, and were created without stylistic embellishment.
