Increasing the GPA Requirements for the Nursing Program:A Feasibility Study English 212 : Technical Writing Angela Chang
Overview • Introduction • Criteria • Methods • Research Results • Conclusion • Recommendations
Introduction • Proposed a study on the feasibility of increasing the minimum GPA entrance requirements for the nursing program at the University of Alaska. • Examined the admission prerequisites for the nursing program with two main focal points: • GPA requirements • Waitlist duration
Criteria • Would UAA benefit from increasing the GPA of the entrance requirements for the nursing program? • Would the changes decrease the number of applicants for the program? • Is the waitlist period too long? • Does the waitlist period effect students’ potential career path?
Methods • Attended the nursing program orientation to gather information about the entire program and what it has to offer. • Interviewed with a College of Health nursing program advisor to establish the specific requirements for the bachelors nursing program. • Reviewed the nursing program website within the University of Alaska’s main webpage. • Conducted research through the University of Alaska Consortium Library database to gather any information related to the nursing program. • Created/distributed a questionnaire to gather information and opinions from students currently enrolled in the University of Alaska. • Interviewed students who are currently in the nursing program to acquire opinions about their waitlist experience.
Results: Current Nursing Program • The University hold an open-admission policy for all prospecting students; including those entering the nursing program. • The Nursing Program has gained in popularity • The GPA minimum requirement is 2.7 • There is a mandated waitlist period of 24-months for all students who are admitted into the program • Waitlist was created to accommodate the amount of students who enter into the program and the amount of staff and space available.
Results: Questionnaire • Participant age groups : • 18-29 : 12 Students • 30-39 : 2 Students • 40-49 : 1 Student • Nine out of 15 participants were full-time students, while the other six were part-time. • Participants were asked and estimated number of years set to complete their educational career. • 40% of the respondents chose two to four years, while 60% percent answered with five to seven years. • 80% of the participants would reconsider their career path if their degree required a 24-month waitlist period
Results: Questionnaire Figure 1. Is the 24-month waitlist period a reasonable amount of time before being able to start the University of Alaska’s nursing program? 14 out of the 15 respondents agree that the 24-month waitlist period is an unreasonable amount of time.
Results: Questionnaire • Figure 2. Could you be admitted into the nursing program with the minimum GPA requirement at 2.7. The graph illustrates that 10 out of the 15 respondents would be able to enter into the nursing program with the minimum GPA requirement at 2.7. This shows a 66.66% rate of students who would be admitted for the waitlist.
Results: Questionnaire • Figure 3. If the minimum GPA requirement was increased to 3.2, would you still be able to be admitted into the nursing program? The graph illustrates that only 7 out of the 15 respondents would still be able to enter into the program. This shows a 46.66% rate of students who would be admitted for the waitlist, which is a 20% decrease of students.
Results: Questionnaire • 2.7 GPA increase to 3.2 GPA • The results show a 20% decrease in the amount of students who could enter into the program • Decrease in amount of students could result to a shorter waitlist period.
Conclusion • Increase of minimum nursing program requirements • Decrease in amount of students eligible • Decrease in duration of waitlist period • Decrease in number of students inclined to change career path • The higher prerequisites would accommodate the influx of students entering the program • Still upholds core values and vision for prospecting students • Will not sacrifice student/teacher ratio and space available
Recommendations • Reevaluate the admission requirements • Increase the minimum GPA prerequisite • Decrease the waitlist period if suitable
