  11. A Different Kind of King • Was Esther predestined by God to become queen? • If so, did Xerxes have a choice? • Is that a contradiction? No, but it’s a mystery. • The fact that we can’t conceive of free choice coexisting with God’s predestination simply reminds us once again that he is God and we are not.

  12. The doctrine of God’s providence • God has a plan that includes everything that happens in the universe, and • God’s plan extends to the tiniest details of life, and • God uses all events—good and bad—to accomplish his purposes.

  13. A Different Kind of King • Providence means that God is in charge of the entire universe at all times and nothing happens outside his control. • Whether you see Him or not, He is at work in your life this very moment. God specializes in turning the mundane into the meaningful. • God not only moves in unusual ways, He also moves in uneventful days.

  14. History = His Story • When rightly written, history is a record of God’s providence; and he who would read history rightly, must read it with his eyes constantly fixed on the hand of God. • From the Scriptures we find basic truths that may serve as the foundation of our understanding of history. • This is not likely what you learned in school.

  15. Kings in Contrast • TheProvidence of a Wise & Sovereign God • The Participation of mortal men • The Perfection of a Godly King • He gives dignity rather than takes it • His commands are always for the good of His subjects • He never asks us to do anything perverse • He views people with purity not sensuality
