Our response • ‘Where skills providers focus on the specific skills needed by the local economy coupled with a broad base of employability skills students are eminently more employable after finishing their studies’ • Graham Razey, May 2014 • Where this does not happen employers are often critical of the skills of young people particularly in the generic areas of timekeeping, work ethic and customer service. • ‘Where employers engage in the skills development journey of students they are acutely more aware of the challenges faced in education of producing the skilled technicians of the future. This can lead to tailored programmes that ensure that the skills being developed are matched to the industries need’

Headliners • £170 million of additional finance will be made available, made up of £85 million in 2014 to 2015 and £85 million in 2015 to 2016, split across the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Department for Education, as the initiative covers the 16 to 24 age bracket • £20 million of new finance is also being committed to further support degree level and postgraduate apprenticeships. This is being allocated as £10 million in 2014 to 2015 and £10 million in 2015 to 2016.

Challenge • Evaluate yourself as a business – do you genuinely see apprenticeships as a credible route for your business? • What can you do today to start changing the mind-set of your business and sector- you are the leaders and influencers • If business community says education is not producing the skills for business growth, then we challenge you to get involved and tell us what you need.
