  1. Unit A: Energy and Matter Exchange in the Biosphere

  2. Section 1.1 Equilibrium in the Biosphere • Earth is a closed system • Matter is not exchanged with its surroundings however energy can be transferred • What provides us with our energy? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6ubvEJ3KGM

  3. J.E Lovelock (British Scientist) • Compared Earth to a living body • Referred to as the “Gaia” hypothesis • Greek goddess of Earth • Emphasizes that all living things interact with each other and with non-living components

  4. Dynamic Equilibrium • continuous changes occurring, but components have the ability to adjust to changes without disturbing entire system • What are some examples of dynamic equilibrium?

  5. The Biosphere • Earth has 3 structural zones that make up the biosphere • 1.) lithosphere (land) • 2.) hydrosphere (water) • 3.) atmosphere (air) • What structural zone do animals inhabit? • Can Earth’s core and the upper atmosphere affect organisms? How?

  6. Abiotic vs. Biotic • What is the difference? • What are some examples of each?

  7. Levels of organization- the individual • What is the basic unit of life? • What is a collection of cells? • What is a collection of tissues? • What is a collection of organs?

  8. Levels of organization- the Ecosystem • Start at the organism level (interaction between abiotic and biotic items) • A group of individuals of the same species occupying a given area at a certain time would be referred to as a ________________ • A collection of all the populations that occupy a habitat is referred to as a ________ • A community and its physical and chemical environment is referred to as an ________________

  9. Biodiversity • The number of species in an ecosystem • The reduction in biodiversity caused by a single species can cause a “domino effect”- analogy (removal of a car part) • Can cause a collapse of food chain • A food chain • A sequence linking organisms that feed on each other, starting with a food source and continuing with each consumer • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TE6wqG4nb3M#t=13

  10. Example of Domino Affects • Over-hunting sea otters • Sea otters prey on sea urchins • Sea urchins would then increase in population • Kelp would decrease in populations • Fish populations would decrease due to the lack of kelp • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_aSl3iL7rM

  11. Whooping Crane • Chemical pesticides were the birds original threat however they were still struggling due to • They fly long distances during migration • Acceptable to hunting and accidents • Reproduce very slowly • Females produce 2 eggs/year- only one matures • Humans have managed to increase their population from 14 (1940) to 213 (2004) • http://www.cbc.ca/player/Radio/Tooth+and+Claw/ID/2401773801/ • JON MOOALLEM

  12. Generations have had their idea of the animal world filtered through Disney. But has the magical kingdom been a force for good or ill in the *real* animal kingdom? • Do you think Telus or other advertisements (such as Coca-cola) with animals has had a impact on animal conservation?
