  2. Positional Sanctification • Romans 8:3b-4 – God’s plan to liberate the believer • Romans 8:3b – He condemned sin in the flesh… God condemned the sin nature in our fleshly bodies.

  3. Positional Sanctification • Romans 8:4 – He condemned the sin nature so that the righteous requirements of the Law could be fulfilled in those of us whodonotwalk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

  4. Positional Sanctification • Any believer who walks according to the fleshly nature cannot please God. • Only a believer who walks by, or according to, the Spirit can please God and thus fulfill the righteous requirements of the Law.

  5. Positional Sanctification • Romans 8:5-7 – The potential for either a magnificent life or a miserable life • Paul contrasted a life dominated by the flesh (sin nature) with one dominated by the Holy Spirit. Galatians 5:17

  6. Positional Sanctification • Romans 8:5a – Earlier, we determined that those who are in (Greek: EN) the flesh are the unsaved (Romans 7:5). They have their minds set on the flesh. In a similar manner, those believers who walk according to (Greek: KATA) the flesh have set their minds on the flesh. 1 Corinthians 3:1-3

Positional Sanctification • To set your mind on something means to entertain, or occupy your mind with it, or to dispose your thinking toward it. • We may want to believe otherwise, but to the degree that we walk according to the flesh, we are fleshly or unspiritual in our living. 2 Corinthians 1:16-17, 10:2-6

  8. Positional Sanctification • Romans 8:5b – By contrast, those who walk according to the Spiritoccupy their minds with the things pertaining to the Holy Spirit. 2 Corinthians 5:16

  9. Positional Sanctification • Romans 8:6 – Theconsequence of a mind seton the flesh is death while the results of a mind set on the Spirit are life and peace.

  10. Positional Sanctification • The mind set on the flesh is death. Death is a noun, emphasizing the type of life you have if you set your mind on the flesh. (John 6:63) You will live a useless life devoid of fellowship with God. • But the mind that is set on the Spirit speaks of the believer who is walking according to the Holy Spirit and has a mind filled with life and peace. John 6:63

  11. Positional Sanctification • Life in this context implies real, abundant living. John 7:38 • This peace (Greek: EIRENE) means prosperity, quietness, rest, or, literally, to be set at one again. • Every human being desires this peace whether he knows it or not.Romans 14:17, Colossians 3:14-17

Positional Sanctification • Romans 8:7 – We need to know that if we set our minds on the flesh, we will become carnal.The characteristics of the carnal mind are • Insolence: The mind of the believer who is walking according to the flesh (and all unbelievers) is hostiletoward God. Christians who walk by the flesh are resistant to God.

  13. Positional Sanctification • Insubordination: The mind of the believer who is walking according to the flesh (and all unbelievers) doesnotsubjectitselfto the Law of God. Christians who walk by the flesh are not submissive to God.

  14. Positional Sanctification • Ineptitude: The mind of the believer who is walking according to the flesh (and all unbelievers) is incapable of ever pleasing God (cannot please God). Christians who walk by the flesh cannot please God in any way.

  15. Positional Sanctification • When we lack peace, feel far from God, do not want to pray, or experience many broken relationships, we are most surely walking according to the flesh and not according to the Spirit. Christians who walk by the flesh are cold toward God.

  16. Positional Sanctification • Romans 8:8-11 – The presence of the Holy Spirit in each believer’s life seals his present salvation and guarantees his future glorification. • Romans 8:8 – The unsaved are in theflesh and cannotplease God.

  17. Positional Sanctification • Just as we are now in Christ, we were once hopelessly locked away in Adam. Romans 5:12-19, Ephesians 1:1-7 • Romans 7:5 – Those who are in the flesh (unbelievers) are totally incapable of pleasing God. • Romans 8:8-9a – Even though we are not in the flesh, we can easily walk accordingto the flesh and cease to please the Lord.

Positional Sanctification • Romans 8:9 – The Bible describes the saved as those who arein the Spirit or those who have the Holy Spirit dwelling in them. • Paul would not say to a natural man (unbeliever) that he is in the Spirit, nor would he command the natural man to walk according to the Spirit; only those who have the indwelling Spirit of Christ are in the Spirit.

  19. Positional Sanctification • Because we as believers have the indwelling Spirit of Christ, we belong to Christ. Anyone who does not have the Spirit does not belong to Christ, period!1 Corinthians 12:13, Galatians 3:26-27, Ephesians 1:13-14 • Just because we are inthe Spirit rather than in the flesh does not guarantee that we will walk accordingto the Spirit. When we do walk according to the Spirit, spiritual growth and maturity can occur.

  20. Positional Sanctification • Romans 8:10 – Though your physical body is subject to death due to sin, your human spirit is alive and well because of righteousness and for the purpose of righteousness. • Romans 8:11 – The Holy Spirit living in you not only guarantees the future resurrection life to your mortal body but also provides you that kind of life in the present.

  21. Positional Sanctification • Life to your body later • The Holy Spirit, who gave life to the lifeless body of Jesus Christ, will one day also give life to your body, which is subject to death. Romans 1:4

  22. Positional Sanctification • We will be resurrected after we fall asleep in Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:21-22, Ephesians 1:13-14, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 • We will be raptured if we do not die before Christ returns for His bride.1 Corinthians 15:50-51

  23. Positional Sanctification • Life to your body now • The same Holy Spirit who brought Jesus Christ to life is the same Spirit that lives in you! Ephesians 1:19-20, Philippians 1:21, Colossians 1:27

  24. Positional Sanctification • Because eternal life is to know (fellowship with) God the Father and God the Son in a practical and intimate way, you can experience eternal life on earth.John 3:16 – the believer has eternal life, John 17:3.
