  3. Hope for Peace, Plan for War • After Lexington/Concord the Second Continental Congress was called. • By June 1775 the Congress agreed the colonies needed to prepare for war. • First they had to form an army: The Continental Army. • There would be full-time, paid soldiers in addition to the militia. • George Washington was asked to be commander-in-chief (the general) of the new army.

  4. The Continental Army needed supplies. • Each colony was asked to donate money to buy guns, bullets, and uniforms. • The Congress began printing its own paper money instead of using British money.

  5. Continental Currency

  6. The Battle of Bunker Hill • After Lexington/Concord citizens of Massachusetts began building walls of dirt and stone near Boston. • British General Gage heard the colonists were preparing for battle on Breed’s Hill, near Boston.

  7. Gage ordered British ships to fire on the colonists. • Then he sent 2,400 soldiers to capture Breed’s Hill. • The colonists ran out of gunpowder, so the British won. • The British army was shocked the colonists fought so hard! • More than 1,000 redcoats were dead. Only 350 colonists died. • The battle was misnamed for nearby Bunker Hill. (oops!)

  8. A Foreign War • In July 1775, the Second Continental Congress agreed to send a FINAL petition to the king. • It was known as the Olive Branch Petition. • King George was too mad to listen, and he was getting desperate. • He hired soldiers from Germany called Hessians. • The king also called for Native American allies.

  9. ON THE OTHER HAND: • The Second Continental Congress created a navy and a marine corps. • They also hadNative American allies. • In September 1775, Georgia finally agreed to join the Congress. • Finally!! the Continental Congress stood for all 13 colonies.
