  1. Why PWE3 Should Adopt TDMoIP Shahram Davari Product Research Group PMC-Sierra Shahram_davari@pmc-sierra.com

  2. Some Applications of TDMoIP • Leased line services over IP/MPLS • Between a customer site and a PoP • Private line service over IP/MPLS • Between two customer sites (PSTN bypass) • Toll bypass • Between two Central Offices (CO) • Cellular backhaul over IP/MPLS • Between BTS and BSC • Carrier’s carrier

  3. Reuse of Existing Technologies • AAL1 is designed for circuit and loop emulation • AAL1 is a proven technologies with off-the-shelf or available HW/SW • AAL1 has a number of desirable features • Clock recovery mechanism • Structure pointer (for multi-frame recovery) • Support for CAS • Support for structured and unstructured TDM • Support for Nx64 Kbit/sec • Optional error correction (FEC)

  4. Need for Interworking with ATM • Interworking with ATM is often required. • Carriers currently use ATM for circuit/loop emulation Simple and inexpensive RADview SNMP Manager T1/E1 T1/E1 ATM SAR ATM CES TDMoIP IP/MPLS ATM TDMoIP ATM CES T1/E1 Complex and costly SAR << TDMoIP + ATMCES

  5. Ease of Interworking between ATM CES and TDMoIP/MPLS AAL1 PDU AAL1 SAR IP/MPLS ATM IP/MPLS AAL1 PDU TDMoIP/MPLS SAR … ATM ATM ATM ATM CES

  6. ASAP Reuse • Any Service Any Port is an important architecture • It supports any service using a single card • It reduces inventory for network operators • It reduces the vendor’s development cost • Current ASAPs support AAL1 • They can easily be SW upgraded to support TDMoIP • Providers don’t need to acquire new cards, they can re-use existing cards. • Any other method requires new HW and major change of ASAP architecture

  7. Preserve existing Layer 2 ATM Infrastructure T1/J1/E1 Framers TU/VT Mappers M13 Muxes T3 Framers AAL1 Engine HDLC Engine TDM Framer TDM Framer Sonet Framer TDM Framer IMA Engine Software Upgrade to IP/MPLS Infrastructure SONET/SDH Framer optics NP TM & Policing IP/MPLS Inteworking AAL1 SAR/CES Structured & Unstructured Easy Upgrade to IP/MPLS CES from Current ASAP

  8. Conclusion • TDMoIP is based on proven AAL1 technology •  no risk • TDMoIP is based on off-the-shelf or available AAL1 HW/SW •  fast time to market • TDMoIP Interworks seamlessly with ATM •  easier and less expensive Interworking • PWE3 should adopt TDMoIP for TDM emulation over IP/MPLS
