  3. The Algebraic expressions, the equation and the methods for manipulating equations that we have learned are useful only if we can apply them to daily life situations. In solving verbal Problems, we are never given the equation to solve directly; we must form the equation based on what the story tells us, represent the unknown numbers as literal numbers, and form an equation based upon the relationship about these numbers. PROCESSES IN SOLVING VERBAL PROBLEMS: Read Represent Relate Equate Solve Prove READING: Reading Mathematics is different from reading an ordinary story or a newspaper. We must be sure we catch each word. Also we must keep asking ourselves 2 questions: 1) How would we represent this in mathematical terms? 2) Is this the piece of information necessary? Hmmmm… VerbalProblems

  4. exAmpLe • One number is two more than thrice the another. There sum is 30. find the numbers. • Represent: x = first number • 3x + 2 =the other number • Solve: x+3x+ 2= 30 4x+2= 30 4x = 30-2 4x=28 4 4 x=7 >1st number • NOTE: represent 7 on the 2nd equation as the x 3(7) + 2 = ? 21 + 2 =23 > 2nd number • Prove: • 23 + 7 = 30

  5. The sum of the two number is 34 and their difference is 3. Find the numbers. Huh?! How? REPRESENT: x = one of the numbers 34 – x =other number SOLUTION: x – (34 - x) = 3 2x – 29 = 3 2x = 3 + 29 2x = 32 2 2 x =16 34 – 16 = 18 Prove: 16 + 18 = 34 How easy! dUh.. The twice a number increased by 8 is 22. find the number. What?? REPRESENT: 2x + 8 = other number SOLUTION: 2x + 8 =22 2x + 8 = 22 2x = 22 – 8 2x = 14 2 2 x = 7 PROVE: 2(7) + 8 = ? 14 + 8 = 22 exErCiseS!

  6. NEXT LESSON Wahaha!

  7. In dealing with the age problems, it is important to keep in mind that the ages of different people change at the same rate. For example, after two years, all the people in the given problem are two years older than they were at first. Four years ago, all the people in the problem were four years younger. If possible, represent the youngest present age by a single letter, then represent the other ages. This process is illustrated in the following examples. The sum of Troy and Gian’s age is 60. nine years ago, Troy was twice as old as Gian then. How old is Gian? REPRESENT: x = Gian’s present age. 60-x = Troy’s present age 60 – 9 = 51 (past nine years ago) SOLUTION: 51 – x = 2(x-9) 51 – x = 2x – 18 3x = 69 3 3 x = 23 NOTE: represent 3 on the 2nd equation as the x 69 – 23 = 46 > 2nd equation PROVE: 23 + 46 = 69 AgeprobLemS and itsexAmpLe

  8. Janelle is now 20 years older than his boyfriend. In 10 years, he will be twice as old as his boyfriend’s age. What are their present ages? WHAT???? REPRESENT: x = Boyfriend’s present age x + 20 = Janelle’s present age 20 + 10 = 30 (future age 10 years from now) SOLUTION: x + 30 = 2(x + 10) x + 30 = 2x + 20 x = 10 10 + 20 = 30 PROVE: 40 = 2(20) 40 = 40 Billie jean is 15 years old now. Represent her age 3 years from now. HOW eaSy..! Is thAt onLy? REPRESENT: 15 + x = his present age x = 3 SOLUTION: 15 + 3= 18 Billie Jean’s age for the next 3 years to come is 18 years old. exErCiseS!
