Interim Results of Pethidine Usage Reduction in Emergency Departments: August 2003 Workshop

This report presents the interim aggregate results from the Pethidine Reduction Project conducted in Emergency Departments (EDs) across NSW. Supported by the National Institute of Clinical Studies, the project's goal was to achieve a 50% reduction in pethidine use with each audit cycle, with audits beginning in January, April, and July 2003. The results indicate a significant 47% reduction in pethidine units issued to EDs to date. This document explores the issues related to pethidine and other analgesics prescribed in emergency settings, analyzing prescriber patterns and indications for use.
