  2. Location and Temperature • Arctic tundra is located in the northern hemisphere, extending south to the coniferous forests of the taiga • average winter temp is -34° C (-30° F), average summer temp is 3-12° C (37-54° F)

  3. Soil and Season • permafrost • The summer is brief •  low precipitation (6 to 10inches a year)

  4. Characteristics • Extremely cold climate • coldest and the driest of all the biomes on Earth • Simple vegetation • Short season of growth and reproduction • Energy and nutrients in the form of dead organic material

Interesting Facts • In the summer months, the sun shines all the time • The only tree that grows in the tundra is the dwarf willow tree. • As the sea freezes, the salt rises to the surface as crystals called ice flowers • The word "tundra" means land of no trees • Dust and grime make the ice darker, less heat is reflected
